Fantasia has announced its third and final wave of programming for the upcoming 26th edition, and it's a doozy! This year's closing night film will be July Jung’s Next Sohee fresh outta' Cannes Critics' Week. Closing night will also include a special screening of A24's Bodies Bodies Bodies. Pierre David will be honored with the Prix Denis-Héroux award, celebrating his invaluable contributions to the horror genre as a producer for filmmakers like David Cronenberg. Rounding out this third and climactic wave will be Michel Hazanavicius's viciously funny Final Cut, Denis Cote's intimate and transgressive That Kind of Summer, and the powerful adaptation of the classic web manga My Broken Mariko.
This year the Fantasia International Film Festival celebrates its 26th anniversary in Montreal, taking place from July 14 – August 3, with its Frontières International Co-Production Market being held July 21 – 24. Screenings, panels, and special events will be taking place at the Concordia Hall and J.A. de Sève cinemas, with additional screens at the Cinémathèque Québécoise, Cinéma du Musée and the McCord Museum. Ticket pre-sales will open on July 9, at 1PM.

SLEUTHS, WAI KA-FAI’S GRAND RETURN Disgraced cop Jun (Lau Ching-Wan) and pregnant police detective Yee (Charlene Choi) must solve cases new and old to bring a crew of killer vigilantes to justice in DETECTIVE VS. SLEUTHS, the new film from Hong Kong filmmaker Wai Ka-Fai, whose idiosyncratic brilliance has been absent from screens for more than a decade. A LIFE ON THE FARM SHOWCASES AN UNLIKELY FILMMAKER’S LONG-LOST TAPE Found-footage enthusiasts will adore this crowdfunded documentary that’s equal parts morbid and hilarious. Sixteen years ago, filmmaker Oscar Harding’s grandfather, who lived in rural England, passed away. Amongst his possessions was a dusty VHS tape from his quirky farmer neighbour, Charles Carson, who enjoyed documenting his everyday life in a wildly imaginative fashion. Kim Kangmin Stop-Motion Masterclass Tuesday, July 26, 7pm, York Amphitheatre, free admission As part of Fantasia’s Korean animation spotlight, stop-motion animation director Kim Kangmin will speak about where his ideas come from, and how to incorporate them into short films using various techniques.
Stop F*%#king up the planet: Concrete steps the film industry can take to reduce our carbon and waste footprint July 20, 6PM, York Amphitheatre, free admission We are in a climate and ecological emergency. The United Nations’ IPCC Report tells us we have less than 3 years to begin decarbonizing our societies to avoid catastrophic climate change. The film industry, which up to now has been vastly wasteful and polluting, must do its part to rapidly and drastically reduce its fossil fuel consumption and waste. Invited guests at this special panel presentation will inform us on how best to change industry practices, from the macro to the micro level, using practical and achievable solutions. Speakers will include: Dr. Heather Short, PhD Earth Sciences and Climate Science Educator; a representative of Rolling Green (“On tourne vert”), a program which facilitates the adoption of eco-friendly measures for audiovisual productions in Québec; Adrian Knight, Location Manager and member of the Directors’ Guild of Canada’s National Sustainable Climate Action Committee; Elza Kephart (SLAXX), filmmaker and climate activist. Special Event: The Film Society of Montreal presents THE POE MORGUE: A JOURNEY INTO FEAR WITH FILM, MUSIC AND THEATRE Monday, August 1, 9:30PM, J.A. de Sève cinema No author has influenced the horror genre more than Edgar Allan Poe. His vivid imagination has inspired hundreds of films in the last 110 years by directors such as Federico Fellini, Dario Argento, George Romero, Roger Corman and Robert Eggers. Expect an immersive multi-dimensional experience of short films unearthed from Montreal’s Film Society archives. See a 1928 silent version of FALL OF THE HOUSE OF USHER with live piano along with other shorts on 16mm and 35mm. Plus, on stage, actor James Malloch (of X-MEN: APOCALYPSE) will recite two beloved poems by Poe. For fans of the macabre, this will be an evening of disturbing delights.
