Ghostface takes Manhattan.

We've got a pretty big update on Scream 6 (which does not yet have an official title), as filming is currently underway on the next installment in the legendary slasher franchise. It had previously been revealed that the next film would take the action away from Woodsboro, where it all started with Sidney Prescott and Ghostface. But where are the new victims headed, and where will the bloodshed be displayed? It looks like we're going the Jason Takes Manhattan route.

According to the folks at Bloody Disgusting, Scream 6 will indeed take place in New York City. Unfortunately, not much else has been revealed by way of official plot details, but a brief synopsis states that "The Scream saga continues with the four survivors of the Ghostface killings as they leave Woodsboro behind and start a fresh chapter." It appears as though that fresh chapter will be in NYC, a location that will be entirely new for this particular series. Filming is currently underway in Canada.

As far as what else we know, Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, of Ready or Not fame, are returning to the director's chair after helming this year's Scream. James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick are also returning to write the screenplay, meaning the core creative team behind the recent sequel is back on board. Paramount and Spyglass, it's worth noting, wasted little time in getting the sequel going so they could have it in theaters next year.

Courtney Cox will help anchor this latest installment to the past as she will again reprise her role as Gale Weathers. The survivors from the last round of murders will also be back with Melissa Barrera as Sam, Jasmin Savoy Brown as Mindy, Mason Gooding as Chad, and our new scream queen Jenna Ortega returning as Tara. Sadly, Neve Campbell will not be returning as Sidney.

However, a pleasant surprise is Hayden Panettiere's return as Kirby from Scream 4. The only newcomer announced as of yet is Dermot Mulroney (Zodiac, Insidious: Chapter 3), who will reportedly be playing a cop of some kind. Beyond that, everything else is being tightly guarded, and we likely won't learn too much by way of specifics until much closer to the release.

Scream 6 is currently set to hit theaters on March 31, 2023.
