Michael Mohan's Immaculate is one of several high-profile and heavily-buzzed-about horror films headed our way this year via the good folks at NEON (see also: Cuckoo and Longlegs). Starring Sydney Sweeney as an American nun who uncovers sinister secrets at a remote Italian convent, the film looks sharp, scary, and gorgeously shot. But that's not all: according to the director, it might also establish Sweeney as a new scream queen.

In a new interview with Total Film (via Games Radar), Mohan says:

"In our film, the terror is about something very real and deep and personal and raw. The last two minutes of this film – it is the most unhinged performance Sydney has ever given. It fully establishes her in the pantheon of scream queens. Like, no doubt."

That's a helluva tease! Of course any director worth his or her salt will spend the time prior to a new film's arrival talking up the performances of his big stars, but this sounds a little less like the standard-issue support of a director in promo mode and a bit more like something specifically rattling occurs in Immaculate's final moments. You gonna turn your nose up at Sydney Sweeney in full nun regalia going absolutely apeshit onscreen? We're not.

As previously reported, Immaculate also stars Simona Tabasco, Álvaro Morte, Benedetta Porcaroli, Dora Romano, Giampiero Judica, and Giorgio Colangeli. It is Sweeney's second collaboration with Mohan, after the 2021 erotic thriller The Voyeurs.

Nothing further to report on Immaculate at this time, but we imagine this hype train's gonna be rolling right up until the film's arrival in theaters on March 22nd, so stay tuned for further updates as they roll in.
