As a fervent admirer of 2011's Cuban zom-com Juan of the Dead, as well as everything writer/director Alejandro Brugués has done since (including segments and episodes of 50 States of Fright, Nightmare Cinema and From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series), the news that he's tackling his next horror feature is an absolute mood-lifter.
Today Deadline reports that Brugués will be directing The Last Will and Testament of Charles Abernathy for Netflix. In addition to being exactly the kind of title I like (mouthy, formal yet cheeky), The Last Will is based on a highly sought after script by Hard Kill and The Au Pair Nightmare's Chris LaMont and Joe Russo. Paul Schiff is producing, and Dan Clarke will executive produce.
But what of the plot? Here's the scoop:
The story follows billionaire Charles Abernathy who, on the eve of his 75th birthday, invites his four estranged children back home out of fear that tonight someone – or something – is coming to kill him. To ensure his family will help protect him from whatever’s coming, Abernathy puts each of their inheritances on the line – they’ll get nothing if he’s found dead by dawn.
Tinges of The Westing Game and Ready or Not? With Brugués onboard? Yep to all of this.
