Bella Ramsey Suggests THE LAST OF US May Not Return Until 2025

You can't rush perfection.

The first season of HBO's The Last of Us recently wrapped its first season (and with one helluva finale, we might add), and now just about everyone's asking the same question: "OK, but when does season two start?"

We've been hearing for some time that The Last of Us Part II would serve as the basis for season two, and possibly even seasons two and three, and just about everyone involved with Neil Druckmann and Craig Mazin's overwhelmingly popular series seems to agree that'd be the way to go. But again, when should we expect to be watching it?

According to The Last of Us star Bella Ramsey (in a recent interview on The Jonathan Ross Show), it might be a smidge longer than you were hoping for. Here's what she had to say, via Bloody Disgusting:

"Ramsey remarked that season two of the hit show 'will be a while', but that shooting will most likely start near the end of the year. 'I think we’ll probably shoot at the end of this year, beginning of next.' As for just when season two will premiere, Ramsey say that new episodes will start airing 'probably by the end of 2024, early 2025.'”

If that timeline's correct, it's likely that Druckmann and Mazin plan to spend the next however-many months breaking The Last of Us Part II down into two halves (season two and season three), then crafting the story arcs for each. Filming begins end of the year, they spend some months doing that, and then - near the end of 2024 or the beginning of 2025 - the whole thing will start up again.

That might sound like a long time, particularly during an age when the real apocalypse seems like it could strike at any moment, but any veteran HBO fans will tell you that a year-and-a-half between seasons ain't the longest wait in the world. Remember those years-long breaks between episodes of The Sopranos? If we could handle that, we can handle this.

Also worth mentioning: while we assume Ramsey knows what she's talking about, this timeline hasn't been confirmed by Druckmann or Mazin, and could be subject to change. Given the success of the show's first season, we imagine there'll be clarification on this point sooner rather than later, and we'll know things are getting serious once casting announcements begin. Good luck to whoever ends up playing Abby!

Nothing further to report on The Last of Us's second season at this time, but we'll be keeping our ear to the ground for further updates, and will have those in front of you just as soon as we hear 'em. Stay tuned, everyone!
