As reported by Variety: directors David Fincher and Steven Soderbergh recently sat down for a joint conversation at this year's Tribeca Film Festival, during which Fincher confirmed that he is currently working on a 4K remaster of his 1995 serial killer thriller, Seven (no, we will not be referring to Seven as Se7en here, I'm sorry).
Said Fincher:
"We’re going back and doing it in 4K from the original negative and we overscan it, oversample it, doing all of the due diligence and there’s a lot of shit that needs to be fixed. Because there’s a lot of stuff that we now can add because of high dynamic range. You know, streaming media is a very different thing than 35 mm motion picture negative in terms of what it can actually retain. So there are, you know, a lot of blown-out windows that we have to kind of go back and ghost in a little bit of cityscape out there.”
This is exciting news! Seven is one of Fincher's best films, a corkscrewing mind-fuck of a movie which only seems more special with each passing year. Would any studio make Seven in 2023? With that ending? Debatable!
There's no word on when the 4K remaster of Seven might hit shelves, but we're patient. In the meantime, we have Fincher's The Killer to look forward to: that film, written by Seven's Andrew Kevin Walker (it's based on Alexis Nolent's graphic novel of the same name) and starring Michael Fassbender, Arliss Howard and Tilda Swinton, will hit Netflix on November 10th.
