Almost exactly one year ago, we learned that Barbarian producer Alex Lebovici’s Hammerstone Studios had partnered with Hideo Kojima's Kojima Productions to bring the iconic game director's Death Stranding to the big screen. In the time since, news regarding the Death Stranding movie has been hard to come by ... but today brings us quite the update.

Per an announcement made via the company's official Twitter page, A24 has now partnered with Kojima Productions to get Death Stranding made. As of this writing, it is unclear whether Hammerstone Studios is still involved.

For the uninitiated, Kojima's Death Stranding is set in a post-apocalyptic United States where the doorway between the worlds of the living and the dead has swung wide open, the game finds you traveling across miles of frequently-barren landscape, avoiding BT's (invisible monsters who've crossed over into our world), delivering packages, and trying to build connections between the pockets of humanity that still survive.

Per Deadline:

"Kojima Productions’ first-ever feature project promises to delve into the mysteries surrounding an apocalyptic event called the 'Death Stranding,' which blurred the lines between life and death, and brought forth nightmarish creatures into a world on the brink of collapse."

Kojima had the following to say about the project:

“A24 was born into this world about 10 years ago, their presence is singular within the industry, they are like no other. The films they are delivering to the world are high in quality and very innovative. I have been attracted to their creations and they have even inspired my own work.
"There are a lot of 'game adaptation films' out there but what we are creating is not just a direct translation of the game. The intention is that our audience will not only be fans of the games, but our film will be for anyone who loves cinema. We are creating a Death Stranding universe that has never been seen before, achievable only through the medium of film, it will be born.”

At present, there's no word on a production timeline or who might be starring in the Death Stranding movie, but we're guessing it won't be another year before we have another update to share. Stay tuned, folks!
