Capcom still isn’t reviving the Dino Crisis franchise for whatever reason but thankfully, the folks at Dead Drop Studios have decided to step in and fill that void. Available now for console and PC, the company has released a new game called Dinobreak and it is a blatant, not-at-all-subtle homage to the ‘90s and, very specifically, the original Dino Crisis. The company has done just about everything it can to paint that in plain English all over the advertising but only far enough so they won’t get sued. Have a look at the trailer, which is a real blast from the past.

It’s downright easy to confuse this for a Dino Crisis game at times. It’s got that retro feel, that stiff voice acting, and the early 3D dino graphics. For those who enjoyed gaming in the late ‘90s and early 2000s, this should feel right at home. The official description of the game reads as follows:

“The crises of the past return in Dinobreak as dinosaurs overwhelm a metropolitan city on a fateful night in 1999. Band together with survivors across the city to uncover the origins of the onslaught, and find a path to safety. Dinobreak looks, sounds and plays like a '90s-era survival horror game. Cheesy acting, extreme gore, exhilarating action, and resource management await as you fight through hordes of dinosaurs to escape alive. Take one last trip to the world of survival horror in this one-of-a-kind adventure.”

The game allows the player to switch between fixed camera, over-the-shoulder, or first-person shooter modes, and players will also have to contend with limited inventory space for in-game items, not unlike Resident Evil. There’s also a bonus mode called Operation: Feral Raptor that promises non-stop action. The best part is the game retails for just $19.99 and, if you want to play it on PC, it’s currently available for just $15.99. It is also widely available on various consoles including the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S and Xbox One.

Luckily, indie developers are stepping up to make sure that we don’t have to rely on AAA game studios to make dinosaur games these days. Aside from this, we’ve also got Deathground to look forward to, as well as the long-awaited Instinction, which should finally be arriving next year. In the meantime, this looks like a reasonably priced way to kill some time.

Dinobreak is available now on console and PC.
