A long-rumoured live-action adaptation of Disney's Gargoyles series has finally been confirmed - with horror icons James Wan and Annabelle and It writer Gary Dauberman at the helm, and the show making its debut over on Disney+.

In an exclusive, The Hollywood Reporter revealed yesterday that Dauberman will write, executive produce and showrun the series with Atomic Monster (Wan and Michael Clear's production company) joining the executive producing ranks. The project is described as being in early development at Disney Branded Television.

For those reading who aren't 80s/90s kids, Gargoyles hit screens almost 30 years ago, and followed the hijinks and capers of a group of gargoyle statues moved from a castle in Scotland to modern-day New York.

Once in the Big Apple, the statues awaken from a thousand-year-old spell and take on the mantle of protecting the city, becoming, as the show’s narration gravely said, “stone by day, warriors by night.”

Gargoyles will mark the latest in a series of fruitful collaborations between Wan and Dauberman, with Dauberman penning many entries into Wan's The Conjuring universe spin-offs, including all three Annabelle movies, The Nun and producing this year's The Nun II. Dauberman is also in the director's chair for the long-awaited Salem's Lot movie. THR also reminds us that the two also worked together on Swamp Thing, the short-lived series based on the slimy DC character.

Wan confirmed the news over onInstagram with the caption "Excited to be working with Gary again, on this! He's a true [Gargoyles] fan."

The Gargoyles adaptation has been long awaited by fans of the original series, with recent rumours even circulating that Academy Award-nominated screen legend Kenneth Branagh was in talks to direct (rumours quickly debunked by Gargoyles co-creator Greg Weisman.) Although we're fans of Branagh, we can't help but rejoice that Gargoyles has instead ended up in the capable hands of horror hit-makers Wan and Dauberman.

We'll be bringing you all the Gargoyles updates as and when we get them!
