This morning, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced this year's Oscar nominations. Some of the nominees felt like foregone conclusions (Chris Nolan's Oppenheimer raking in 13 nominations isn't terribly surprising), while the requisite round of snubs (no Best Director nom for Greta Gerwig) already has social media denizens lighting their torches and hoisting their pitchforks. A fairly standard Oscar Nominations Morning, in other words...

...save for one category that we'd like to draw your attention to: Takashi Yamazaki's Godzilla Minus One earned a nomination in the Best Visual Effects category, making it the first very Godzilla movie ever to receive an Oscar nomination. That's right, Big G is headed to this year's Academy Awards ceremony! For the record, the nomination names four people associated with Godzilla Minus One's visual FX: director Takashi Yamakazi, Kiyoko Shibuya, Masaki Takahashi, and Tatsuji Nojima.

We're gigantic fans of Godzilla Minus One here at FANGORIA HQ, so we are of course extremely delighted by this turn of events. Worth noting, however, that the competition in this category will be fierce - Yamazaki's film is up against no less than The Creator, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, Society of the Snow, and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Not a slouch in the bunch!

No matter. We know who we'll be rooting for come Oscar night. Congratulations to Yamazaki, Shibuya, Takahashi and Nojima on their well-deserved nomination for Godzilla Minus One (which is hitting theaters in a black-and-white version this weekend; if you haven't already seen Yamazaki's film, we recommend fixing that immediately), and here's hoping you take home the gold when the Oscars airs on March 10th!
