It has been one heck of a journey for Dead Island 2, a video game that has been in development for just about a decade. It has changed studios, entered long periods of radio silence, and has been delayed multiple times. It genuinely felt like this game was never actually going to be released. Well, developer Deep Silver has announced today that not only is the game still on track for release in April, it is actually coming our way a week early. So get ready to craft some weapons with assorted junk and get to killing zombies!

As we can see there, the sequel has “gone gold,” which means that it has officially been approved for release through the major marketplaces by companies like Microsoft and Sony. The important thing is, it means the game is absolutely done and ready to go, much like when the MPAA has rated a movie. It’s the last step in the process and an important one at that. As means of celebration, it was revealed that Dead Island 2 will now arrive on April 21 instead of April 28. The developers had this to say about it in a press release:

“Deep Silver and Dambuster Studios are in equal measures absolutely thrilled and totally relieved to confirm today that the long anticipated zombie slaying saga Dead Island 2 has GONE GOLD. As a celebration the two companies have also decided to shorten the wait for fans and release the game in all its versions one week earlier than they were expecting.”

We are now very close to the completion of a very long journey. The original Dead Island was originally released way back in 2011, more than a decade ago. It was finally confirmed last year that the sequel was really, truly going to be released this year, with the actual release date shifting a few times since that original announcement. The original game took place on an isolated island (hence, the title). But, as we all know, zombie outbreaks simply can’t be contained! This time around, the action is headed to Los Angeles, which promises to be a larger, more chaotic experience. The synopsis for the game reads as follows:

“A deadly virus is spreading across Los Angeles, turning its inhabitants into ravenous zombies. The city is in quarantine and the military have retreated. Bitten, infected, but more than just immune, you learn to harness the tainted powers running through your veins. Only you, and the handful of other swaggering assholes who happen to be resistant to the pathogen, hold the future of Los Angeles (and humanity), in the balance. You were born to this. As you uncover the truth behind the outbreak you’ll uncover the truth of who – or what – you are. Survive, evolve, save the world – just another day in LA!”

Dead Island 2 arrives on the Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, Xbox One, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4 and PC on April 21. It is available for pre-order now at DeadIsland2.com.
