In yet another powerful display of the horror genre's stranglehold on theater-going audiences, Patrick Wilson's InsidiousThe Red Door raked in a massive $32.6M at the domestic box office this weekend. For those keeping score at home, that's the second biggest opening for an Insidious film since 2013's Insidious: Chapter Two (which earned $40.2M).
And that's not all: Insidious: The Red Door's worldwide box office take this weekend was $64M, nearly double its domestic take. For a film with a $16M production budget, that's one helluva win. No Insidious film has ever earned less than $100M at the worldwide box office, and it seems all but guaranteed that The Red Door won't be the first.
Insidious: The Red Door seems to mark the end of the Lambert Family saga within this franchise (though of course we can't really say for sure; you know how these things go), but it's certainly not the end for Insidious movies: even before Wilson's film hit the box office jackpot, Screen Gems, Blumhouse and Atomic Monster had already announced Thread: An Insidious Tale, a spin-off involving a husband and wife (played, respectively, by Kumail Nanjiani and Mandy Moore) who "enlist the help of a spell to travel back in time, such that they can prevent the death of their young daughter." One has to assume their plan will not work out as intended.
Anyway, it's always a pleasure to kick off a Monday with the news that yet another horror film has cleaned up at the box office. Congratulations to all involved, and good luck to Nanjiani, Moore, and director Jeremy Slater on Thread: An Insidious Tale. We're very much looking forward to seeing where that one takes us!
