Jurassic Park is not only one of the biggest movies ever made, but it's also one of the most important and respected blockbusters in cinema history. That Steven Spielberg fellow sure seems to know how to make a motion picture, doesn't he? Even though it's a couple of months past the anniversary, Universal Pictures has announced that the greatest dinosaur movie ever made is headed back to the big screen later this month - in 3D!
Beginning August 25, Jurassic Park will arrive in theaters nationwide to commemorate the film's 30th anniversary. The film originally hit theaters on June 11, 1993, and became one of the most successful movies in history. It also pioneered CGI in filmmaking, effectively allowing Spielberg to bring extinct creatures to life. The secret sauce is the blending of compute-generated imagery alongside some of the best animatronics ever produced for film, and you can see those glorious dinos in 3D in just a couple of weeks.
This is actually something that Universal has done before. For the film's 20th anniversary in 2013, Jurassic Park was released in 3D for the first time. However, that was a much bigger deal with a wider release, and it grossed a very substantial $118 million at the global box office. This appears to be a far more modest re-release. Even so, it still offers viewers the chance to experience an undeniably cinematic masterpiece in a theater, which is a rare treat. Not that anyone truly needs a refresher, but the synopsis for the film reads as follows:
“Paleontologists Alan Grant (Sam Neill) and Ellie Sattler (Laura Dern) and mathematician Ian Malcolm (Jeff Goldblum) are among a select group chosen to tour an island theme park populated by dinosaurs created from prehistoric DNA. While the park's mastermind, billionaire John Hammond (Richard Attenborough), assures everyone that the facility is safe, they find out otherwise when various ferocious predators break free and go on the hunt.”
Unlike the dinosaurs at the heart of this franchise, the JP brand is alive and well. Last year's Jurassic World Dominion grossed $1 billion worldwide, and producer Frank Marshall stated that the studio has no plans to end the series. No more movies have officially been announced, but that's an inevitability at this point. Elsewhere, some classic Jurassic Park video games from the '90s are getting re-released later this year for various consoles and PC. It's a good time to dig dinosaurs, to be certain.
