Dinosaur lovers, rejoice! Netflix is filling the prehistoric-sized hole in our hearts with a brand new animated series set in the Jurassic Park universe. As part of the company’s Geeked Week celebrations, the streamer announced Jurassic World: Chaos Theory, which is due to premiere next year. While few details have been made available, a brief teaser trailer has been released online, which is more than enough to pique the interest of hardcore fans check it out.
The first thing that stands out here is the impressive animation, as that T-rex looks quite good. The other thing that is worth dissecting a bit is the character who appears at the end. Those who watched Netflix’s previous animated series in this franchise, Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous, may well have raised an eyebrow. Though not officially confirmed, that very much looks like Darius Bowman all grown up. The other noteworthy bit is that title, which is a direct reference to none other than Jeff Goldbloom’s Ian Malcolm.
The show’s very brief logline reads, “After the park has closed, after the kingdom has fallen, a new era of chaos begins…” That gives us a clue about the timeline, as the show will clearly pick up in the aftermath of 2018’s Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom. That means this is either going to pick up before or around the events of last year’s Jurassic World Dominion, as dinosaurs are out in the world mingling with humans. Hence, the chaos.
Netflix has done right by this franchise in the past. Even though it was aimed at kids, Camp Cretaceous served as a very solid addition to the universe. It ran for five seasons, with the final installment dropping last year. Apparently, the streaming giant wanted to stay in the dinosaur business as they wasted no time in getting this follow-up show off the ground. Meanwhile, the future of the franchise outside of made-for-kids animation is a little up in the air. That said, given that Dominion made more than $1 billion at the box office, it wouldn’t be remotely surprising if Universal Pictures decided to make more movies in the not-too-distant future.
Jurassic Park director Steven Spielberg is on board as an executive producer of the series alongside Colin Trevorrow, Frank Marshall, Scott Kreamer and Aaron Hammersley. Kreamer and Hammersley are also serving as showrunners. DreamWorks Animation is the animation studio behind the show, with Universal Pictures Amblin Entertainment producing.
