It’s Friday and we can’t leave you rolling into the weekend without something fun and interesting. As such, we’ve got a brand new trailer for the upcoming creature feature Crabs. As the name implies, it is a low-budget horror flick about giant killer crabs, which the producers describe as “Zombeavers meets Godzilla versus Attack of the Crab Monsters.” That is one heck of a description, so let’s see what that looks like in practice.
The trailer is just about as corny and ridiculous as one might expect. Then again, anyone even remotely curious about a low-budget horror movie called Crabs is probably going to find anything but disappointment in the footage. A dead whale carcass, tons of cheesy special effects, no shortage of blood, and yes, gigantic crab monsters. If nothing else, the trailer is certainly delivering on the promise of the title. For a little more context, here is the movie’s official synopsis:
“Mutated by nuclear runoff, a horde of murderous horseshoe crabs descend on a sleepy California town causing Prom Night terror. As the deadly crustaceans claw their way through the disbelieving population, it’s up to a ramshackle band of students and police to address the increasingly ginormous crab menace in a love letter to such practical effects horrors as Gremlins and nostalgic Roger Corman classics.”
The film serves as Pierce Berolzheimer’s feature directorial debut. He also penned the screenplay. The cast includes Dylan Riley Snyder, Jessica Morris, Robert Craighead, Allie Jennings, Bryce Durfee, and Chase Padgett.
These kind of cheeseball horror movies are incredibly tough to nail down in the modern era. One used to be able to sell something like this at a video store by spending all of the money on some compelling VHS cover art, but now? It’s hard to get through the wall as there are limitless options in the streaming age, with only the occasional low-budget B-movie breaking through. Most recently, we can look at how The VelociPastor managed to catch a wave on the internet and become a hit (relatively speaking), thanks in no small part to its absolutely insane story angle of a pastor that turns into a dinosaur. Could this movie catch on with a similar section of the internet? It’s tough to say, but it at least smells like it’s got a chance.
There is still no word on a release date for Crabs, though the movie’s Twitter account says “coming in 2016.” So this one has been waiting in the wings for quite some time, it seems. With any luck, given the new trailer's release, we’ll actually see it sooner rather than later.
