Those who enjoy shooting mutant, zombie-like creatures have reason to celebrate as Killing Floor 3 has officially been announced. Tripwire Interactive made the reveal during this year's Gamescom event, confirming that a third installment in the popular first-person shooter franchise is in development for the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, and PC. They were even kind enough to release a teaser trailer. Check it out.
The trailer is very violent, with some Doom-like imagery going on. All we’re missing is the heavy metal soundtrack. The graphical improvement compared to the first two games is evident, and this looks like a full-blown next-gen upgrade. The opening cinematic portion of the trailer is particularly impressive - not to mention bloody.
“As a lifelong horror fan, it's been an honor to lead our passionate development team as we create Killing Floor 3," said Bryan Wynia, Studio Creative Director at Tripwire Interactive. "We're extremely excited for fans to finally experience the world we've been building." Alan Wilson, Co-Founder and CEO at Tripwire Interactive, had this to add:
“It's hard to believe that Killing Floor is almost 15 years old now. We've provided free support to the player base all that time, through two incarnations, so now we're beyond excited to start showing you what mayhem the next iteration of the franchise will bring you!"
The original Killing Floor was released back in 2009, with the popular Killing Floor 2 arriving seven years later in 2016. It appears as though the developer is sticking to that seven-year cycle between installments, assuming the new game arrives before 2023 is up. The new game will pick up decades after the second installment, putting players smack in the middle of a dystopian future. The synopsis for the game reads as follows:
“The year is 2091, 70 years after the events in Killing Floor 2, and megacorp Horzine has produced the ultimate army: an obedient horde of bio-engineered monstrosities called Zeds. Now, the only thing standing between these infernal creations and the future of humanity is the rebel rogue group known as Nightfall. This intense first-person shooter puts players in the role of a Nightfall specialist, joining forces with up to five teammates as they battle through a war-ravaged, dystopian future, surviving unrelenting waves of Zeds, unlocking new skills, and building the ultimate arsenal.”
