You had the toys. You played the NES game. And now you will watch the TV series. Or else.

Horror fans of a certain age will probably remember M.E.G.'s Monster In My Pocket, the classic late '80s toyline that did for pocket-sized monsters what M.U.S.C.L.E. Men did for pocket-sized wrestlers. Over 200 tiny monsters were created for the 500M unit-selling toyline, all of them pulled from pop culture, campfire legends, and various global mythologies, and were popular enough to earn their own animated TV special, an NES game, and a number of comic books.

It may have been many years since the Monster In My Pocket franchise crossed your mind, but that all changes today with the announcement that Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith’s Westbrook Studios and Altar Rock Pictures are teaming up to turn M.E.G.'s once-iconic toyline into a live-action TV series.

The news comes to us via Deadline, who say that both companies are currently meeting with writers to figure out what this TV series will be about. Presumably it will involve tiny monsters, pockets, and the relationship between the two, but beyond that it's really anyone's guess. Do you have a Monster In My Pocket pitch? Maybe you should drop Will Smith a line.

David Boorstein, SVP, Head of Scripted TV at Westbrook, had the following to say:

“We’ve seen a real thirst for projects rooted in nostalgia. Monster In My Pocket had such a major impact on our culture, and we’re excited to dive into the rich, captivating legends of these beloved characters, bringing new life to such an iconic brand alongside our partners at Altar Rock Pictures and MEG.”

Just as there's no telling what the live-action Monster In My Pocket might end up being about, there's no word on where this series might end up, who might star in it, whether it will lead to the launch of a new Monster In My Pocket toyline (it will), or when we might actually get to see it. It's in development, and that's gonna have to be good enough for the time being.

Stay tuned for more on the live-action Monster In My Pocket TV series as further updates become available.
