Mortal Kombat is bringing the goods this year in a big, bad way. Not only are we getting a brand new game, but we’re also getting another animated film in the franchise. This time, it takes place in the ‘80s and focuses on none other than Johnny Cage. Mortal Kombat Legends: Cage Match is due out later this year from Warner Bros. Home Entertainment, and the folks at IGN have revealed the cast for the upcoming animated flick, as well as some official plot details. It all sounds pretty wild, in the best of ways.

First up, Joel McHale, of Community fame, is voicing Johnny Cage in the film, having previously done so in the other Mortal Kombat Legends entries. Perhaps most interesting of all is that Dirty Dancing actress Jennifer Grey is starring in the film as herself. Yes, really. As for the how and why on that specific point? The film’s official synopsis carries the answers, and it reads as follows:

“Neon lights...Suits with shoulder pads...Jumping from explosions in slow motion...In 1980s Hollywood, action star Johnny Cage (Joel McHale) is looking to become an A-list actor. But when his costar, Jennifer (Jennifer Grey), goes missing from set, Johnny finds himself thrust into a world filled with shadows, danger, and deceit.

As he embarks on a bloody journey, Johnny quickly discovers the City of Angels has more than a few devils in its midst. He faces off against a sinister secret society plotting a nefarious scheme, but the brutal fight against the bloodthirsty warriors of the Netherrealm is just beginning. Can Johnny, alongside other Kombat legends, save humanity...and, more importantly, his career?”

That is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the cast. The ensemble also includes Dusan Brown (Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom) as Chuck Golden, Grey DeLisle (Teen Titans Go!) as Kia, Robin Atkin Downes (Luck) as Shinnok, Zehra Fazal (Lucifer) as Jataaka, Gilbert Gottfried (Aladdin) as David Doubldy, Kelly Hu (Arrow) as Ashrah, Matt Yang King (Elemental) as Concierge, Phil LaMarr (Futurama) as Brian Van Jones, Matthew Mercer (Resident Evil: Death Island) as Director/Bully, Dave B. Mitchell (Call of Duty) as Raiden and Armen Taylor (Justice Society: World War II) as Master Boyd.

This is the fourth entry in the animated Mortal Kombat Legends series, following in the footsteps of 2020’s Scorpion’s Revenge, 2021’s Battle of the Realms, and 2022’s Snow Blind. As mentioned, we’ve also got a new game in the ultra-violent series on the way later this year in the form of Mortal Kombat 1, which looks to reboot the continuity. Meanwhile, a sequel to 2021’s live-action Mortal Kombat movie is well underway, with the project casting up as cameras figure to get rolling sooner rather than later.
