Today Variety announced that Amazon Studios is joining Animal Kingdom and Playtime to remake Severin Fiala and Veronika Franz's 2014 Austrian psych-horror Goodnight Mommy, with Naomi Watts set to star and executive produce.
Franz and Fiala are also onboard as executive producers, with David Kaplan, Joshua Astrachan, Valery Guibal and Nicolas Brigaud-Robert producing. Take Me to the River's Matt Sobel will direct the script by Kyle Warren.
I know it's easy to bag on English-language remakes of international horror – I've certainly done it myself a time or two – but Naomi Watts is a phenomenal actress who should be in more genre stuff always, and with Fiala and Franz participating, there's no reason to dismiss this film out of hand.
All of that said – if you haven't watched the original Goodnight Mommy, do so now.
