Netflix is continuing to make original horror happen as they have picked up the rights to an original script that is, as described, a pretty remarkable mash-up of two wildly different movies. The movie in question is called Apex, which hails from writer Jeremy Robbins. According to a recent report from Deadline, the streamer will produce the film alongside Chernin Entertainment and Ian Bryce.

No word yet on who might be eyed to star or who will wind up in the director’s chair. It’s also unclear just how soon production could begin. Keep in mind that these deals for scripts don’t always result in a movie actually getting made and, even if it does eventually get made, it can take years to materialize. That’s not always the case, but it’s worth pointing out. Now, as for the specifics of Robbins’ script? The outlet revealed the following description:

“The script is described as Free Solo meets Silence of the Lambs and follows a rock climber who finds herself being hunted in the wild.”

THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS (1991)

That is worth raising an eyebrow over. How does one combine a hair-raising documentary about a fearless free climber and a movie about an FBI agent who has to work with a cannibal to catch a murderer who is making clothes out of women’s skin? That is a great question and an intriguing one at that. If what’s on the page lives up to the promise of that question, it’s not hard to see why Netflix would try to make it a reality. It also, for what it’s worth, sounds a bit like a low-budget, little-seen movie called The Ledge that was released in 2022.

Robbins may not have a lot of credits to his name as of yet, but he’s been rather busy as of late. He wrote for two seasons on The Purge TV show, which ended its run in 2019. He’s also currently developing a show with franchise creator James DeMonaco, and he served as a producer on The Spiderwick Chronicles TV series. This marks his first feature screenplay credit. Who knows? Maybe DeMonaco can occupy the director’s chair for this one since The Purge 6 doesn’t seem to be going anywhere for the time being. Your move, Netflix.
