Following the hit trilogy of Leigh Janiak's Fear Street movies that hit Netflix in 2021, Collider have today exclusively revealed that a fourth, stand-alone Fear Street is currently in the works over at the streaming giant.
Speaking at the grand reopening of the American Cinematheque at The Egyptian Theatre Hollywood, Head of Netflix Film Scott Stuber answered Collider's questions about the future of Fear Street, which legendary horror author and series creator R.L. Stine had pretty much confirmed last month.
Stuber's full quote, via Collider, reads as follows:
Obviously, there’s a lot of books [...] There’s one stand-alone that we’re working on right now that we’re once again trying to get the script right, but I like it very much, and so does the team. So I feel like if we can get that script right there would be a great kind of extension of that franchise.
Starring Kiana Madeira (She Never Died), Sadie Sink (Stranger Things), Fred Hechinger (The Woman in the Window) and Maya Hawke (Stranger Things), the original trilogy was set over the span of several decades (each film subtitled Part One: 1994, Part Two: 1978 and Part Three: 1666 respectively) and followed a group of teenagers taking on an evil force that has plagued their town of Shadyside for centuries. The episodic release proved a hit with fans, and Netflix clearly took notice.
Stuber went on to assure horror fans that the recent few years of box office blockbusters have not gone unnoticed by the streaming giant, who are keen to establish themselves further in the horror game:
I think there are two complexities to it; one, it’s an event right now in theaters, right? It’s a communal event that really is working theatrically, and so for us to be able to get the right stories, I think it’s imperative, and to be a little more aggressive in that space.
Furthermore, it seems like Netflix are also keen to establish their very own horror icon, with Stuber expanding:
If you look at its history, which I love horror, I’d like us to find our own Freddy Krueger, our own Jason, our own kind of iconic horror character, and we haven’t really honed in on that yet. So the team is working hard on that because I think there’s a real opportunity there. You know, you’ve got so many great characters.
Whether or not the upcoming Fear Street is the same one rumoured to be in production by Watcher's Chloe Okuno, or a new entry into Janiak's desired "horror MCU" remains to be seen, but whatever the case, we're excited.
