Gil Kenan's Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, the highly-anticipated sequel to Jason Reitman's Ghostbusters: Afterlife, gets an icy brand new trailer today ahead of its March 22 theatrical release date, a full week sooner than it was previously expected.

The latest addition to the franchise kickstarted by Ivan Reitman's 1984 classic once again throws things back to the glory days, with a huge and exciting cast that includes deep breath Dan Aykroyd, Bill Murray, Ernie Hudson, Paul Rudd, Kumail Nanjiani, Patton Oswalt, James Acaster, Emily Alyn Lind, Finn Wolfhard, Mckenna Grace, Celeste O'Connor, Logan Kim, Annie Potts, and Carrie Coon.

An official plot synopsis reads as follows:

In Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, the Spengler family returns to where it all started – the iconic New York City firehouse – to team up with the original Ghostbusters, who’ve developed a top-secret research lab to take busting ghosts to the next level. But when the discovery of an ancient artifact unleashes an evil force, Ghostbusters new and old must join forces to protect their home and save the world from a second Ice Age.

Alongside the veteran cast, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire will bring back another iconic cornerstone of the Ghostbusters world, Slimer (plus another adorable fan favorite that the trailer reveals...) as well as introducing a whole new host of ghouls. Taking influence from the late ‘80s animated series The Real Ghostbusters, director Kenan promises we'll see some “wild, original and weird-as-f*** villains" taking over the icy streets of New York City. If this trailer is anything to by, Kenan is going hard on the nostalgia - and we suspect fans will be totally here for it.

Don't forget, Ghostbusters fans - there's also the upcoming comic Ghostbusters: Back in Town headed your way on March 27. To tide you over for both Back in Town and Frozen Empire, here's that trailer:

ADDENDUM: And here's the film's just-released international trailer, which contains a bunch of footage not glimpsed in the trailer above!
