2023 was an incredible year for horror games. From edge-of-your-seat fright fests like the phenomenal Alan Wake 2 to the claustrophobic intensity of Amnesia: The Bunker, it was a year filled with unforgettable titles from both the indie and AAA space. 2024 is already gearing up to make a strong impression, too, with a variety of games already announced that are sure to keep us on our toes.

Looking ahead, there are many worth keeping on your radar, but we wanted to gather our fifteen most-anticipated horror games. These offer a wide range of experiences, so whether you’re looking for pure survival horror or spooky puzzle-y platformers, there’s a little something for everyone to enjoy. From the highly-anticipated reimagining of Alone in the Dark to the eerie new installment in the Little Nightmares franchise, here are fifteen games coming in 2024 that we’re incredibly excited about.

Alone In The Dark - March 20, 2024

Alone-in-the-Dark_characters

Alone in the Dark is a reimagined version of the 1992 game of the same name. Much like Resident Evil has done with remakes of its earlier games, Alone in the Dark is opting for an over-the-shoulder third-person perspective rather than the original’s now-retro fixed camera angles. From this new perspective, we’ll have a better view of the stellar cast that will guide us through this terrifying tale. Killing Eve’s Jodie Comer and Stranger Things’ David Harbour lead as Emily Hartwood and Edward Carnby, respectively. Carnby is a private investigator hired by Emily to track down her missing uncle within the haunting halls of Derceto Manor. Both are playable as you progress through the manor’s creepy corridors.

If you need any more convincing, the writer behind this game is Mikael Hedberg, the astonishing mind behind Soma and a couple of the Amnesia games. Not only that, but the developer, Pieces Interactive, “is supported by monster designer and legendary Guillermo del Toro collaborator, Guy Davis, as well as Doom Jazz legend Jason Köhnen, who provides his eerie and haunting melodies for the right atmosphere,” per THQ Nordic. It’s set to release on March 20, 2024, so make sure to mark your calendar. Check out our in-depth preview of the survival horror adventure.

Little Nightmares III - TBD, 2024

Little Nightmares III

Little Nightmares III, announced during Gamescom’s Opening Night Live 2023, turns this tiny but mighty series of games into a trilogy. The brief trailer features two brand-new characters, named Low and Alone, as they make their way through the terrifying, sprawling world of The Nowhere. Each has their own weapons: Low uses a bow and arrow, while Alone has a trusty wrench.

The most exciting part of this reveal is that you can play Little Nightmares III in online co-op. This is a first for the franchise and will be fun to take advantage of with another person. However, if you want to embark on this spooky journey solo, the role of Player 2 will be filled by an AI, so you can still get the extra assistance with all of its platforming and puzzles. No release date is officially set yet, but keep it on your radar as we head into the new year.

Still Wakes The Deep - Spring, 2024

Still Wakes The Deep

There’s nothing more frightening than the thought of being stranded out in the middle of the ocean. Add to that being stuck on a gigantic oil rig in the middle of a storm, losing all communication, with something horrific hunting down you and your crew, and you’re in for a terrifying tale. That’s what Still Wakes the Deep has in store for those brave enough to step foot on the Beira D oil rig.

Still Wakes the Deep is developed by The Chinese Room, the team behind Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs and Everybody’s Gone to the Rapture, and will be released sometime next Spring. Its short teaser trailer, revealed during the Xbox Games Showcase in June, gave us a little taste of what to expect from its creepy atmosphere (with a short clip of the creature’s creepy screech at the end), so hopefully, we can get our hands on it sooner rather than later. It’s also coming day one to Xbox Game Pass, so members can set sail to this isolated oil rig the day it releases.

Senua's Saga: Hellblade II - TBD, 2024

Senua's Saga- Hellblade 2

Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II was initially revealed back in 2019 at The Game Awards, but this year, developer Ninja Theory finally gave us a window of when we can expect to see it: 2024. No specific release date has been set yet, but knowing it’s coming within the next year is exciting enough.

Once again, Hellblade II will put players back in Senua's shoes as she takes on even greater demons, both internally and externally. And once again, the graphics are simply astonishing. In a Development Diary from Ninja Theory, the team showcased how they’ve been “capturing the likeness of real actors” and “handcrafting costumes using traditional techniques,” in order to make these characters look as real as possible when scanned in. It’s a level of detail that’s sure to be a feast for the eyes, and given how impressive the creepy audio design was in its predecessor Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice, Hellblade II is sure to be a treat for the ears as well. This game will also be a day-one release on Xbox Game Pass for members. The first game is also on there now, so you can play through it before the sequel comes out.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart Of Chornobyl - TBD, 2024

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2- Heart Of Chornobyl

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl has quite the development history, but it’s finally set to release on both PC and Xbox Series X|S in early 2024. This game is the fourth game in the series and comes after S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Call of Pripyat, which was released back in 2010. It’s one that many are eager to finally get their hands on, and it seems like it’ll have plenty of exciting features for players to enjoy.

Built up in Unreal Engine 5, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 offers a tense, terrifying atmosphere for players to drop into and immersive elements that make survival of the utmost importance. Each choice will impact how the game unfolds for you, so you’ll have to tread lightly and be mindful of your surroundings and allies. Much like Still Wakes the Deep, it’s also set to release day one on Game Pass, so if you’re a member, you can jump into it right away.

Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines 2 - Fall, 2024

Vampire- The Masquerade - Bloodlines 2

The Chinese Room is keeping busy with horror titles, as they’re also developing the long-awaited sequel Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines 2. Set in Seattle, players will take on the role of an elder vampire who must form alliances and survive while sticking to the shadows to avoid their vampiric secrets coming to light. It’s a spooky action RPG that’s sure to quench the thirst of those with a love for vampire stories.

It's set to release sometime next Fall, with publisher Paradox Interactive stating on their website that they’ll “be back with a precise date when we open pre-orders.” If they stick with that Fall release date, it’ll be a perfect way to spend next Halloween!

Bye Sweet Carole - TBD, 2024

Bye Sweet Carole

Bye Sweet Carole is a horror platformer with an astonishing art style that evokes Disney's classic 2D animation. Don't let that fool you, though, as there's far more to it than meets the eye. Its style is almost as if Alice fell into an even more twisted and spookier version of Wonderland. This one is well worth keeping on your radar for the art alone, but given the gameplay trailer shown off at Gamescom 2023, it looks like the scary story will be just as interesting to unravel.

Unfortunately, there's no set release date for it yet. However, publisher Just for Games has a big '2024' listed at the bottom of Bye Sweet Carole's page, so we can keep our fingers crossed that the wait won't be too long.

Dark Fracture - TBD, 2024

Dark Fracture

Psychological horror games are always an excellent addition to your library, and Dark Fracture looks well worth the download. This first-person horror game brings some truly terrifying nightmares to life. In it, you'll play as Edward, a man "tormented by a tragic past, whose only solace is in the medicine that helps him to get through the day," per the game's Steam page.

While working the night shift, Edward experiences "a chain of disturbing events" that pull him "ever closer to losing his sanity," as the game walks a fragile line between reality and the horrors of a world beyond our own. It seems like it could possibly draw a bit from the likes of Amnesia, given the sanity factor, but regardless it'll be exciting to see what developers Twisted II Studio have in store. While no release date has been set explicitly for it, it's still listed as a 2024 release, so keep an eye out for it. But if you simply can't wait to get a taste, you can play a demo of Dark Fracture and the Dark Fracture Prologue on Steam right now!

Post Trauma - Spring, 2024

Post Trauma

Alone and trapped in a nightmarish world full of terrifying monsters, Post Trauma has you play as Roman, a train conductor trying to find his way back to reality. From its Gamescom 2023 trailer, Post Trauma seems like a game that draws inspiration from several different horror classics, with Resident Evil and Silent Hill springing to mind. It occasionally utilizes fixed camera angles, has a couple of puzzles to solve to gain weapons, and an atmosphere that's sure to make your skin crawl as you look to see what's hiding in the dark.

According to publisher Raw Fury's website, it's slated to release sometime in Spring 2024. Alongside Alone in the Dark and Still Wakes the Deep, next Spring is sure to be a great time for horror fans.

The Casting of Frank Stone - TBD, 2024

The Casting of Frank Stone

The Dead by Daylight universe collides with the storytelling of Supermassive Games (the minds behind Until Dawn, The Dark Pictures Anthology, and The Quarry) with The Casting of Frank Stone. This game was only just revealed at this year's Game Awards via a spooky trailer that briefly showed off its world, protagonists, and killer.

It doesn't have a set release date, but the final screen of the trailer said 'Coming 2024', so fingers crossed that it gets a nice little Halloween slot. While we don't know much about it, we can gauge from what we know of Supermassive's style already that it'll likely be an intense interactive story with choices that may impact those four characters introduced in the trailer. During an interview with IGN, Supermassive's studio director, Steve Goss stated, "The story hinges and pivots on Frank. Frank is the center of everything that the story will deal with... It is the story of Frank Stone and the lives and the town that his crime touches." It seems like a story that'll be fun for Dead by Daylight fans to pick apart and easy for newcomers to jump into for some scares.

Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden - February 13, 2024

Banishers- Ghosts of New Eden

Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden is akin to The Witcher with a ghostly angle. It centers on a couple, Antea Duarte and Red mac Raith, who are Banishers - individuals tasked with hunting down and exorcizing the supernatural. However, things take a turn for the worse when Antea meets an untimely end. This turn of events sends Red down a path in hopes of bringing her back to life.

Throughout this journey, you'll be able to take on the roles of both of these characters and utilize their different abilities to perform your duties as Banishers. This game is a choice-driven RPG, so your decisions will have heavy consequences as the story progresses. And considering its developed by Don't Nod, the folks behind Life is Strange, it's sure to be a story as devastating as it is spooky. Players won't have to wait long for its release, either, as it's set to come out on February 13, 2024.

John Carpenter's Toxic Commando - TBD, 2024

John Carpenter's Toxic Commando

From one of the masters of horror who just wants "to play video games" (totally understandable, king), John Carpenter's Toxic Commando is a co-op FPS where you can team up with up to four people to shoot down mutated zombies. Per publisher Focus Entertainment's website, it's a must-play for those who love "Buddy-movie vibes and the over-the-top humor, action, and horror of classic '80s cinema, inspired by the legendary John Carpenter."

The man himself is excited to be teaming up with Focus and developer Saber Interactive, adding to his excitement in a statement from Focus saying, "Look, I really like shooting zombies. They keep telling me that they're called' the infected.' Please. They're ghouls, dude. They blow up real good and there are a ton of them. People are going to love this game." And with that, we're sold. It's set to release sometime next year, so keep it on your radar.

Killer Klowns From Outer Space: The Game - TBD, 2024

Killer Klowns From Outer Space- The Game

Another game for those looking for a multiplayer fright fest, and from the creators of Friday the 13th: The Game, Killer Klowns From Outer Space: The Game is here to let players go craazzy as either the titular Klowns or the citizens of Crescent Cove trying to protect their town. You can play in groups of three as the Klowns or in groups of seven as the humans, each with unique abilities and skill sets.

According to Killer Klowns's Steam page, it also features a "unique approach to hide-and-seek gameplay, PvPvE, dynamic objectives leading to multiple match results" and the game "evolves the online horror formula in new ways." Prepare to battle the Klowns (or harvest the humans, your choice) at a yet-to-be-determined date in 2024.

The Outlast Trials - Console release March 5, 2024

The Outlast Trials

Outlast has taken a turn into multiplayer territory with The Outlast Trials. While this game has already been making the rounds on PC in early access, its official release on consoles (Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 5) is coming March 5, 2024, and boy, are players in for a terrifying treat.

Set before the first two games, The Outlast Trials features challenges courtesy of the Murkoff Corporation that you can complete solo or in a team of up to four in order to escape a prison-like facility. Like the previous two games, you'll be tasked with hiding from and avoiding enemies as they patrol the facility while finding your way out. However, you can find items to give you an advantage against enemies, whether that be a way to stun or blind them, or items to improve your health and stamina.

What better way to be scared than with friends? Keep this game in mind as it hits consoles on March 5.

SPECIAL MENTION: Silent Hill 2 Remake - TBD, hopefully 2024?

Silent Hill 2 Remake

While not officially confirmed to be releasing in 2024, the Silent Hill 2 Remake is one we really hope comes out next year. After a thrilling reveal in October 2022, fans have eagerly awaited developer Bloober Team to drop more information on the game. The developers took to Twitter/X in late November to share an update on it, and it seems they're deep in development on the highly-anticipated release.

Their statement reads, "On behalf of our development team, we would like to clarify that the production is progressing smoothly and in accordance with our schedule. We understand that many players around the world are eagerly anticipating news about the game, and we appreciate your dedication. However, we kindly ask for a bit more patience. Once Konami, as the game's publisher, shares more information, we are confident that the wait will be worthwhile."

So, while we don't have any solid confirmation of a release date, we can cross our fingers and hope that Silent Hill 2 Remake makes its debut next year.

And check out games you may have missed in our Best Horror Video Games of 2023.
