At long last, a new Fear Street movie is coming our way. Not only that, but we know what it’s going to be about. The information comes from author R.L. Stine, whose books inspired the trilogy of films that arrived on Netflix in the summer of 2021. Taking to Twitter, Stine revealed that his book The Prom Queen is going to serve as the basis of the next entry in the franchise, with filming set to begin soon.

“Movie News: I can finally announce that a new Fear Street movie is about to go into production for Netflix. It's based on my Fear Street book, The Prom Queen. Good news!” Stine said on Twitter. The book in question was published in 1992 and was the 15th book in the series overall. Netflix has not shared any additional details but it was confirmed by the streamer late last year that a new movie was in development. The synopsis for the book reads as follows:

“A spring night...soft moonlight...five beautiful Prom Queen candidates...dancing couples at the Shadyside High prom - these should be the ingredients for romance. But stir in one brutal murder -- then another, and another -- and the recipe quickly turns to horror. Lizzie McVay realizes that someone is murdering the five Prom Queen candidates one by one - and that she may be next on the list! Can she stop the murderer before the dance is over - for good?”

Fear Street

No word yet on who might star in the film, or if any cast members from the previous three adaptations will return. Netflix released Fear Street Part One: 1994, Fear Street Part Two: 1978 and Fear Street Part Three: 1666 mere weeks apart in 2021. Leigh Janiak directed the trilogy, which was originally produced by 20th Century Fox. But following Disney’s acquisition of Fox, Netflix swooped in to acquire the rights, turning the release into a summertime horror event.

Whether or not Janiak will return in some capacity remains unclear. A December 2022 report stated that Chloe Okuno (Watcher) was developing a new entry in the franchise. Whether or not Prom Queen was the one Okuno was working on has not been confirmed. It’s also yet to be determined if this will be a one-off or if the plan is to make another trilogy. With filming due to begin soon, we should be learning more sooner rather than later.

The new Fear Street movie does not currently have a release date but stay tuned.
