The Emmy nominations have been revealed and, somewhat surprisingly, it was a big year for horror. Not only did HBO’s The Last of Us rack up a whole bunch of nominations, but Hulu’s Prey, the much-acclaimed Predator prequel that debuted on the streaming service last year, earned six nominations. That includes one for Oustanding Television Movie, which it most definitely deserves.

The full list of nominations for the film includes Outstanding Directing for a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie, Outstanding Picture Editing for a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie, Outstanding Music Composition for a Limited or Anthology Series, Movie or Special (Original Dramatic Score), Outstanding Television Movie, Outstanding Sound Editing for a Limited Or Anthology Series, Movie or Special and Outstanding Writing for a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie. We actually interviewed the movie’s composer Sarah Schachner back in December, and you can check that out right here.

Prey was directed by Dan Trachtenberg, of 10 Cloverfield Lane fame, and was met with widespread praise upon its release last year. So much so that many questioned Disney’s decision to release the film direct to streaming, as it seemed like it would have made bank at the box office. But that’s why it’s competing for Emmys and not Oscars, as it technically counts as a TV movie these days. Indeed, in the age of streaming, these lines do get blurry. The key thing here is that a very good movie is getting the recognition it deserves.

Prey-2

The Chainsaw Award-winning film stars Amber Midthunder, Dakota Beavers, Stormee Kipp, Michelle Thrush, Julian Black Antelope and Dane DiLiegro, with a screenplay by Patrick Aison. For those who may need a refresher, the official synopsis for the film reads as follows.

Prey is an all-new action thriller set in the Comanche Nation 300 years ago. It is the story of a young woman, Naru, a fierce and highly skilled warrior who has been raised in the shadow of some of the most legendary hunters who roam the Great Plains. So when danger threatens her camp, she sets out to protect her people. The prey she stalks, and ultimately confronts, turns out to be a highly evolved alien predator with a technically advanced arsenal, resulting in a vicious and terrifying showdown between the two adversaries.

Prey is now streaming on Hulu. The 75th annual Emmy Awards are currently scheduled to air in September, though the ceremony will likely be delayed due to the ongoing WGA strike, so stay tuned on that front.
