Since it was announced earlier this year that Scream 6 would see the franchise move away from the small town setting of Woodsboro and into New York City, the Internet has been abuzz with discussion of how different the new entry into the iconic slasher series will be. After all, a big city means more places to hide and adds about a million new suspects into the mix.

According to Melissa Barrera, who will be reprising her role as Samantha ‘Sam’ Carpenter from the latest Scream, the big city setting opens up a whole new world of terrifying possibilities. When asked by Collider what we can expect from New York City, Barrera had this to say:

"It's, like 20 times more mortifying. It's awful. Because you also see how, in a city like New York City, everyone is kind of doing their own thing and someone is screaming for help, and no one will come to their help. No one comes to help them, you know, like, everyone's kind of like, "I'm not getting into that." So it's mortifying, because you're chased by Ghostface, but you also see humanity and how that reacts in a situation like that. Anyway, I think I've already probably said too much."

The as-yet-untitled sixth movie will see not only Barrera returning, but also Scream 5 fan favorites Jasmin Savoy Brown (Mindy), Mason Gooding (Chad) and Jenna Ortega (Tara).

It was announced earlier this year that Neve Campbell will not be returning as everyone’s favourite final girl Sidney, however, Hayden Panettiere will be making a triumphant return to the role of Kirby Reed. Courteney Cox will also be the first back on the scene as reporter Gale Weathers. Set to make their debut in Ghostface’s world are Ready or Not’s Samara Weaving and Tony Revolori (Spider-Man: No Way Home).

Radio Silence’s Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett will also return as directors. Paramount Pictures has set a March 31, 2023 release date.

Scream 6 will follow the four remaining survivors from the previous instalment as they recover from the latest slasher spree and try to start a new chapter of their lives. However, it sounds like they’re in for a pretty rough ride in the Big Apple, with Jenna Ortega revealing that the new film features “the most aggressive and violent version of Ghostface we’ve ever seen.”
Considering both Ortega and Barrera's comments, it looks like Scream 6 could be the most brutal chapter in the Scream story to date.

What big city would you like to see Ghostface take on next? Chasing victims over London Bridge? Scaling the side of the Eiffel Tower for the perfect Parisian kill? Or maybe grabbing a bowl of ramen in between slashings in Tokyo? Perhaps we’ll see a Jason X type sequel in which the masked maniac jets off to outer space. One thing’s for sure: wherever Ghostface goes, we’ll be following.
