In honor of its tenth anniversary, the original Sharknado is headed to theaters later this month. Yes, as hard as it might be to believe, Sharknado is celebrating its tenth anniversary this summer. The made-for-Syfy B-movie produced by low-budget experts, The Asylum originally aired on the network in July of 2013 and became an unlikely hit that spawned an entire franchise. Now, fans of this brand of monster movie madness will finally have the chance to experience the movie on the big screen with a special two-night-only event.
As announced by The Hollywood Reporter, The Asylum has announced that director Anthony C. Ferrante's Sharknado will be released in theaters nationwide on August 15 and 16, complete with a new 4K presentation. What's more, the studio also boasts that the release will include 100s of new VFX shots as well as "never-before-seen kills and thrills." They've also released an impressively hilarious new poster that is getting in on the Barbie phenomenon, which you can check out below. Starring Ian Ziering and Tara Reid, the film takes place as a freak hurricane sweeps over Los Angeles. Nature's deadliest killer rules sea, land, and air as thousands of sharks terrorize the waterlogged peoples of the city. It's a ridiculous premise befitting a Syfy original, but one that managed to truly take on a life of its own. Movies like Frankenfish and Dinocroc (with all due respect) never managed to break through the noise in such a meaningful way.
To that end, the movie ended up getting a surprising five sequels, including Sharknado 2: The Second One, Sharknado 3: Oh Hell No!, Sharknado: The 4th Awakens, Sharknado 5: Global Swarming and The Last Sharknado: It's About Time. Even more amazingly, there have technically been three spin-offs in the form of Lavalantula, 2 Lava 2 Lantula and Sharknado: Heart of Sharkness. A wildly unlikely franchise and, for my money, that sort of thing is worth celebrating.
Why not give this movie its day in the sun on the big screen? There’s something kind of charming about a mockbuster actually getting the summer blockbuster treatment in some way. One imagines this could end up being like a packed screening of The Room if the vibe is right. This to say, it could be a damn good time at the movies.
