The king is back, baby! This time on Netflix in the form of an animated series. As was announced over two years ago, the Skull Island anime series is finally hitting the streaming service this summer, and we’ve got a trailer teasing the big monster goods coming our way. It’s truly just a brief teaser, but if nothing else, it confirms that this project didn’t get left behind somewhere along the way. Check it out.
They sure pack in plenty of monsters for a brief teaser trailer! While we don’t dive too much into the story of it all, we do see a group of explorers arriving on the infamous island before a giant sea beast makes them realize the gravity of their situation. From there, it’s giant crabs, flying beasts, and all sorts of horrifying creatures to contend with. We get a glory shot of King Kong at the end of the trailer, and he looks quite good in animated form, for my money. As for the story? The synopsis reads as follows:
“Skull Island takes viewers on a thrilling adventure as a group of kind-hearted explorers rescues Annie (Mae Whitman) from the ocean, unaware that their act of heroism will lead them to the treacherous Skull Island. This enigmatic place is home to bizarre creatures and terrifying monsters, including the mighty titan himself, Kong.”
This series is produced by Legendary and is tied to the so-called MonsterVerse. This monster-filled cinematic universe kicked off with Godzilla in 2014 and has grown to include Kong: Skull Island, Godzilla: King of the Monsters and Godzilla vs. Kong. We also have the upcoming Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, which will hit theaters next year. And Netflix won’t be the only streaming service getting a show set in this universe, as a live-action one is in the works at Apple TV+ as well. So there will be no shortage of these monsters on our screens in the coming years, that much is certain.
The cast for the series includes Nicolas Cantu as Charlie, Mae Whitman as Annie, Darren Barnet as Mike, Benjamin Bratt as Cap and Betty Gilpin as Irene. Brian Duffield (Cocaine Bear) created the series, serving as writer and executive producer as well. Jacob Robinson, Brad Graeber, Jen Chambers and Thomas Tull are also on board as executive producers.
Skull Island premieres June 22 on Netflix.
