The biggest surprise horror hit of 2022 is getting a fancy new home video release to help celebrate its one-year anniversary. While that’s not the official reason given by Paramount Pictures for the release, it has been revealed that director Parker Finn’s Smile will be getting a 4K Ultra HD steelbook in September almost exactly one year after the film originally hit theaters. Certainly one of those better late-than-never situations.

Available for pre-order as we speak on Amazon, the Smile steelbook is listed for release on September 12. It currently retails for $31. It’s unclear if the release will be available at retailers, or if it will be an online-only thing. Though it’s not listed as a retailer exclusive so it should be available elsewhere before long. We’ve also got the cover art for you to check out below, which recreates one of the posters for the film.

One thing worth highlighting here is that Paramount did not skimp on the special features for the release. It includes a commentary track from director Parker Finn, a making-of featurette and some deleted scenes, among other goods. While bonus features such as these were standard fare in the heyday of DVD/Blu-ray, it’s not so much a given anymore. Heck, hits such as Barbarian haven’t even been released on Blu-ray at all. Meanwhile, the recent release of Evil Dead Rise had virtually no bonus features to speak of. So points to Paramount on this one.

10. Smile Paramount Pictures

Smile was a surprisingly huge hit, particularly for a movie that was originally going to debut exclusively on Paramount+. Against a budget of $17 million, the movie earned $217 million worldwide. For an original movie from a first-time feature director, that’s quite impressive. As a result, Finn signed a long-term deal with Paramount and is currently developing a sequel. For those who may need a little refresher, the synopsis for the film reads as follows:

“After witnessing a bizarre, traumatic incident involving a patient, Dr. Rose Cotter (Sosie Bacon) starts experiencing frightening occurrences that she can't explain. As an overwhelming terror begins taking over her life, Rose must confront her troubling past in order to survive and escape her horrifying new reality.”

The cast includes Sosie Bacon (Rose), Jessie T. Usher (Trevor), Kyle Gallner (Joel), Kal Penn (Dr. Morgan Desai) and Rob Morgan (Robert Talley).

You can pre-order the Smile 4K steelbook now on Amazon. Be sure to check out the artwork for the release below.
