Sony is looking to kick off the summer season with some horror, and we wouldn’t have it any other way. The studio has shuffled around with its release calendar, and the upcoming Horrorscope has been moved up quite a bit. The film will now arrive in theaters on May 10, 2024, per Bloody Disgusting. Mark your calendars and plan accordingly.
The film serves as an adaptation of Nicholas Adams’ novel of the same name, which hails from Sony’s Screen Gems division. As for why they shifted the date? The film had previously been scheduled to arrive on June 28, 2024. Paramount currently has A Quiet Place: Day One due to hit theaters on that same date, and that feels like a guaranteed hit. More than likely, Sony was just avoiding a needless showdown. That and the WGA and SAG strikes seriously screwed up the release calendar next year, so spreading the love around is a logical move. As for what the movie is about? The ominous synopsis for the novel reads as follows:
“Aries: Avoid confrontations. A bad day for relationships.
Soon she would come.
It was written in the stars.
Finally Jenny Warren left the protective light of the streetlamp behind. She walked fast, her shoes tapping on the sidewalk.
In the shadow of the night, the watcher smiled. His hands tightened their grip on the scarf. You should have paid attention, Jenny, he whispered to himself. Didn't you read your horoscope today?”
How is that going to translate to film? “The story is said to follow a group of college friends who, after getting their horoscopes read, begin dying in ways connected to their fortunes.” Anna Halberg and Spenser Cohen make their feature directorial debut with the film. The duo also penned the screenplay. The cast includes Jacob Batalon (Reginald the Vampire), Alana Boden (The Invitation), Adain Bradley (Wrong Turn), Avantika (Senior Year), Humberly González (Nobody), Wolfgang Novogratz (Assassination Nation), Larsen Thompson (The Midnight Club), Harriet Slater (Pennyworth) and Olwen Fouéré (Mandy).
As we recently learned, Sony is looking to increase the output at Screen Gems with a strong focus on horror. That’s why they signed Gary Dauberman (It, Annabelle Comes Home) to an overall deal recently. This to say, this movie is likely to be just the first of many genre titles from the shingle in the years to come. More horror is never a bad thing.
