Scott Derrickson's The Black Phone, based on the Joe Hill short story of the same name, was something of an unexpected hit last summer. Sure, it racked up a number of positive reviews from critics (coming in for a landing at 81% on Rotten Tomatoes), and yeah, horror's been killing it at the box office in a way that many other genres haven't over the past few years. But The Black Phone was a runaway hit, pulling in over $160M worldwide on the back of its $16-18M production budget.

All of which is to say, a sequel was inevitable, even if said sequel would be forced to venture into territory that went uncovered in Hill's original short story*.

Today, we've learned when that sequel will arrive: June 27th, 2025. We don't know what The Black Phone 2 will be about. We don't know who'll be in it. We don't know if Scott Derrickson will return to direct, or if his regular collaborator C. Robert Cargill will return to write the script. Hell, we don't even know if it'll be called The Black Phone 2. At this juncture, all we can safely say is that it will hit theaters in June of 2025.

Nothing further to report on The Black Phone 2 at this time, but rest assured we'll keep you informed as further updates roll in. Stay tuned, Grabber fans!

*Worth noting: following the release of The Black Phone, Derrickson revealed that Hill pitched him a "wonderful idea" for a sequel, so while the first film may have fully covered the events depicted in Hill's original short story, it sounds like Hill will also be providing the concept that drives the sequel.
