The First Omen

The First Omen, 20th Century Studios' upcoming prequel movie to the 1976 horror classic The Omen, gets a brand new trailer today ahead of its April 5 theatrical release - and truth be told, it looks pretty damn terrifying.

Directed by Arkasha Stevenson (Brand New Cherry Flavor) from a story by Ben Jacoby (Bleed) and a screenplay by Stevenson, Tim Smith and Keith Thomas (Firestarter), the religious horror stars Nell Tiger Free (Servant), Tawfeek Barhom (Mary Magdalene), Sonia Braga (Kiss of the Spider Woman), Ralph Ineson (The Northman), Charles Dance (Game of Thrones), and Bill Nighy (Living).

A plot synopsis reads as follows:

When a young American woman is sent to Rome to begin a life of service to the church, she encounters a darkness that causes her to question her own faith and uncovers a terrifying conspiracy that hopes to bring about the birth of evil incarnate.

More good news? The First Omen is rated R for “Violent content, grisly/disturbing images, and brief graphic nudity", and the trailer certainly doesn't seem to skimp on the grisly goods. There's even a callback to perhaps the most famous scene in Richard Donner's original, but with a fiery new twist.

Fango's own Creative Director Jason Kauzlarich experienced the terror of The Last Omen earlier this week at SXSW, where a confessional booth was on site for horror fans to repent their sins.

You better start repenting yours too before April 5 - here's that new trailer and poster to get you in the mood:
