Suitably recovered from HBO's The Last of Us finale on Sunday? Good. Us neither. The good news coming from GQ Magazine today is that we're getting not just one more season (as we already knew), but possibly multiple. The story of Joel (Pedro Pascal) and Ellie (Bella Ramsey) will continue as the next season(s) adapts The Last of Us: Part II , the second - and to date, last - game in the franchise that the show is based on.
In the interview with GQ, series creators Neil Druckmann and Craig Mazin confirmed the good news:
Will the next season span the entire course of the second game?
Mazin: [shakes head] No. No way.
Druckmann: It’s more than one season.
While the pair of creators would not confirm the exact number of seasons, both of them were adamant in assuring that "more than one is factually correct.”
The Last of Us: Part II was released on the PlayStation 4 in 2020, seven years after the original game debuted. The story (don't worry, no spoilers here) is bigger and more complex, continuing to develop characters we already know, such as Gabriel Luna's Tommy and Rutina Wesley's Maria, while introducing a whole host of new ones. It makes sense then that Mazin and Druckmann want to give the next televised part of the story more breathing room to develop.
Mazin also revealed a little more of what we can expect the second season of The Last of Us, and how closely it will stick to the plot of the game:
There are going to be things that are going to be different, and there are things that are going to be identical. There are things that are going to be added and enriched. There are some things that are going to be flipped. Our goal remains exactly what it was for the first season, which is to deliver a show that makes fans happy.
It's clear that the creative duo are remaining tight-lipped on what's to be expected from the upcoming seasons, and if you've played the second game you'll know exactly why. No news on when production for the next season is slated to start, but we're hoping it's sooner rather than later - and given the series' rapturous reception we don't think we'll have to wait too long.
