Children of the Corn

Hey, remember that Children of the Corn remake you might have heard about a loooong while back? Well, after literally three years of waiting, Deadline have revealed today that Kurt Wimmer's reimagining of Stephen King's Children of the Corn has finally been picked up by Shudder and RLJE films ahead of hitting theaters (again) and digital in March.

For those familiar with King's original 1977 short story and its 1984 adaptation, the synopsis - which differs very largely from either - for the new film will read very differently:

Children of the Corn follows a 12 year old girl in Nebraska who is possessed by a spirit in a dying cornfield. She recruits the other children in her small town to go on a bloody rampage and kill all the adults and anyone else who opposes her. A bright high schooler who won’t go along with the plan is the town’s only hope of survival.

The remake will stand as the ELEVENTH entry into the Corn franchise, with the most recent prior being John Gulager's Children of the Corn: Runaway. The film stars Elena Kampouris (Before I Fall), Kate Moyer (The Handmaid's Tale), Callan Mulvey (The Gray Man) and Bruce Spence (The Road Warrior).

We previously reported on the new Children of the Corn's complicated history, with the film screening at a couple of theaters in Florida in 2020, slap bang in the middle of the pandemic. As a result, people weren't exactly rushing out to catch the film (or any, for that matter). At the time, producer Lucas Foster acknowledged that 'It's a little challenging to release a movie right now, being candid.'

Thankfully now that things are a little calmer, Children of the Corn will be making a triumphant return to select theaters on March 3 for an 18 day theatrical window, and will be available to stream via Shudder on March 21.
