Valak is back!

Get ready for more demon nun action in the not-too-distant future, horror fans. More than four years after the original movie hit theaters, The Nun 2 finally started filming. This, according to The Conjuring universe architect/producer James Wan, who revealed the news on his Instagram page via a behind-the-scenes photo. He also confirmed some casting in the process as well. Take a look.

As had previously been confirmed, Taissa Farmiga will be reprising her role as Sister Irene from the 2018 spin-off, with Michael Chaves (The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It, The Curse of La Llorona) in the director’s chair. We’ve also got Storm Reid (The Suicide Squad) joining the cast, alongside Jonas Bloquet (Elle) and Bonnie Aarons, who returns as the demon nun Valak. For now, Warner Bros. is keeping a somewhat tight lid on the plot, but we do have a brief plot synopsis, which reads as follows:

“1956 – France. A priest is murdered. An evil is spreading. The sequel to the worldwide smash hit The Nun follows Sister Irene as she once again comes face to face with the demonic force Valak – the demon nun.”

Director Corin Hardy’s The Nun remains the highest-grossing entry in The Conjuring universe to date, having earned a truly impressive $363 million at the box office in its day. While it’s unclear why Hardy isn’t returning to direct the follow-up, that kind of number against a $22 million budget ensured a sequel would always be in the cards. Not to mention that, to date, The Conjuring films have earned more than $2.1 billion collectively, worldwide. If it ain’t broke…

Another indicator of the power of this franchise is last year’s The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It, which earned more than $200 million worldwide. This, even though it was also available to stream on HBO Max on the same day it hit theaters in the U.S. The main point being, nearly a decade in, this cinematic universe is showing no signs of wear and tear with audiences. So yeah, bring Valak back for more, and if we can get an Annabelle to Annabelle: Creation-level glow-up in the process, so be it.

The Nun 2 is currently set to hit theaters on September 8, 2023.
