David Robert Mitchell's modern horror classic It Follows officially gets a sequel announcement today, as genre studio NEON reveal via Twitter that the ominously titled They Follow is "coming soon." Variety also reveal that star Maika Monroe is set to return.
Released in 2014, It Follows stars Monroe as Jay, a young woman pursued by a mysterious supernatural entity after a sexual encounter with her boyfriend, who reveals the only way to pass on the terrifying apparitions are to have sex with someone else, and soon. The critically acclaimed horror currently sits at 95% on Rotten Tomatoes, and is regarded by many to be a classic of modern horror.
Talk of a sequel has been circulating since 2015, with Tom Quinn, co-president of distributor Radius-TWC, teasing that a sequel could "flip the title" - presumably meaning a sequel could focus more on the mysterious, nameless entity that terrorizes Jay. A title like They Follow certainly hints as such, as well as presenting the terrifying possibility that there are multiple - perhaps even hordes - of the demons.
Since It Follows, Monroe has made a name for herself as a scream queen, starring in Chloe Okuno's Watcher, the sci-fi horror Significant Other, as well as just wrapping up on Osgood Perkins' Nic Cage-starring serial killer thriller Longlegs. Mitchell on the other hand has remained relatively quiet since It Follows, following up with 2018's black comedy Under the Silver Lake. We can only hope that in those years between that he's been cooking up something TRULY horrifying for They Follow.
Whatever's to follow for They Follow, we'll be bringing you all the news as and when we get it. Until then, stay safe out there - maybe invest in a chastity belt.
It’s everywhere.
