Today brings us the official trailer for HBO's True Detective: Night Country, the latest installment in its long-running murder mystery series. With showrunner Issa López (Tigers Are Not Afraid) at the helm, we're guessing this season's gonna bring the series back to its spooky roots.

Let's take a look...

Here's an official plot synopsis:

When the long winter night falls in Ennis, Alaska, the eight men who operate the Tsalal Arctic Research Station vanish without a trace. To solve the case, Detectives Liz Danvers (Foster) and Evangeline Navarro (Reis) will have to confront the darkness they carry in themselves, and dig into the haunted truths that lie buried under the eternal ice.

It's exciting to see True Detective leaning back into the horror and dread that were so dominant in the show's first season, and doubly exciting to see that telltale spiral showing up again. Will there be some sort of connective tissue between this season's murders and the Yellow King murders from season one? That seems unlikely, but in the world of True Detective, anything's possible.

In addition to Foster and Reis, True Detective: Night Country also stars Fiona Shaw, Finn Bennett, Isabella Star Lablanc, Aka Niviâna, Anna Lambe, and Joel D. Montgrand, Christopher Eccleston, and the great John Hawkes. In addition to showrunning, Issa López is also directing every episode this season, which is yet another reason to be excited.

True Detective: Night Country premieres on January 14th. Stay tuned for further updates as they roll in, folks.
