The Walking Dead may have ended but the zombie apocalypse is just getting started on AMC. The cable network has revealed a brand new trailer for The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live, which is the latest spin-off born out of the popular series that ran for 11 seasons and is based on Robert Kirkman’s comics of the same name. But this isn’t just any spin-off, as it’s finally time for Andrew Lincoln’s Rick Grimes to make his long-awaited return. Not only that, but Danai Gurira’s Michonne is back as well! So, what are they up to these days? Well, it certainly involves a great many zombies. Check it out.

Admittedly, the trailer appears to be keeping the plot details under wraps as best it can for the time being. Instead, it opts to show us the world that Rick and Michonne are walking in. It is one overflowing with the undead, with the last remnants of humanity fighting for survival. It is noticeably very large in scope, with lots of action and big set pieces. At one point, this was supposed to be a movie so that sort of tracks. For those who are still on board with this franchise, this looks like it could be well worth the wait. The synopsis for the series reads as follows:

The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live presents an epic love story of two characters changed by a changed world. Kept apart by distance. By an unstoppable power. By the ghosts of who they were. Rick and Michonne are thrown into another world, built on a war against the dead… And ultimately, a war against the living. Can they find each other and who they were in a place and situation unlike any they’ve ever known before? Are they enemies? Lovers? Victims? Victors? Without each other, are they even alive — or will they find that they, too, are the Walking Dead?”

Lincoln departed The Walking Dead in season 9 and hasn’t been seen since. Michonne exited the following season, which was a big blow given that these two characters anchored the show from the beginning. Bringing them back has been a long time coming. Scott M. Gimple serves as the showrunner of the series. He also serves as an executive producer alongside Lincoln, Gurira, Denise Huth and Brian Bockrath. The cast for the series also includes the likes of Lesley-Ann Brandt (Lucifer), Pollyanna McIntosh (Tales of Halloween), Terry O’Quinn (Lost) and Matthew Jeffers (New Amsterdam).

This is just one of several spin-offs set within this universe that AMC has on its roster. Both The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon and The Walking Dead: Dead City are coming back for second seasons after premiering last year. Meanwhile, Fear the Walking Dead recently ended its eight-season run, while Walking Dead: World Beyond aired for two seasons between 2020 and 2021. Even though the franchise’s peak popularity was years ago it appears that the network has no intention of leaving it behind any time soon.

The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live premieres February 25 on AMC.
