Jamie Lee Curtis is a name synonymous with horror, dating back to her initial appearance as Laurie Strode in 1978’s Halloween. Now, the scream queen is taking her talents to another medium with Mother Nature, which serves as her debut graphic novel, which is due to be published by Titan this summer. Interestingly, the comic is adapted from a script for a movie that Curtis has a deal to make with Blumhouse. More on that in a moment but, for now, let’s have a look at a trailer for this graphic novel, shall we?
A lot going on there, to be certain. It looks like we’ve got a bit of a “nature is angry” thing going on that manifests itself in a trippy, spooky way. Karl Stevens is the one behind the artwork for the book, with Russell Goldman co-writing alongside Curtis. To provide a slightly better handle on the story, here is the official synopsis:
“After witnessing her engineer father die in mysterious circumstances on one of the Cobalt Corporation’s experimental oil extraction projects, Nova Terrell has grown up to hate the seemingly benevolent company that the town of Catch Creek, New Mexico, relies on for its livelihood and, thanks to the ‘Mother Nature’ project, its clean water. Haunted by her father’s death, the rebellious Nova wages a campaign of sabotage and vandalism on the oil giant’s facilities and equipment, until one night she accidentally makes a terrifying discovery about the true nature of the ‘Mother Nature’ project and the malevolent, long-dormant horror it has awakened, and that threatens to destroy them all."
Now, circling back to the movie. It was reported last year that Mother Nature is intended to be turned into a movie as well. Comet Pictures and Blumhouse have partnered on the project, with Curtis said to be eyeing the director’s chair herself. No word yet on casting or how far along the film is, but this graphic novel could almost end up serving as a full-length proof of concept, given that it is adapted directly from the script. In a statement made by Curtis in a press release, the Terror Train and The Fog star explained that she’s had the story cooking for many, many years.
“I first thought about this story when I was 19 years old. I’ve always been aware of the very unbalanced relationship between humans and nature, and even though I was young, I always knew that, inevitably, nature would win. I have long admired and collected Karl’s work, and I’m very excited he suggested expanding the idea to turn it into a graphic novel. The partnership with Titan has now given us a wonderful platform to begin to tell our story.”
Mother Nature hits shelves on July 18 and is currently available for pre-order through Amazon.
