IFC Films has released a brand new, full-length trailer for When Evil Lurks, which appears to be the horror movie of the fall season that you absolutely do not want to sleep on. Hailing from writer/director Demián Rugna (Terrified, Satanic Hispanics), the possession flick was recently screened at the Toronto International Film Festival, where it was met with a warm response, with screenings scheduled at Fantastic Fest in Austin, Texas this week as well. So, what’s all the buzz about? Take a gander.

This trailer wastes precisely zero time getting to the goods. There’s a very unsettling scene with a goat, followed by a really brutal scene with an ax. Any time someone busts out an ax in a horror movie, bad things are going to happen. And that’s truly just the tip of the iceberg. Lots of really messed up bodies, a few jumpscares and a mysterious entity that follows people around while terrible things happen. It checks a lot of boxes, to be certain. We’ve also got a poster for the film for you to check out below. It is stamped with the pretty dark tagline, “There’s no point in praying.” The synopsis for the film reads as follows:

“The residents of a small rural town discover that a demon is about to be born among them. They desperately try to escape before the evil is born, but it may be too late.”

While there are only five reviews counted as of this writing, When Evil Lurks currently holds an unblemished 100% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The early word is strong on this one. The only slight problem is that the film is hitting theaters on October 6, the very same day as The Exorcist: Believer, which recently moved its release date up by a week thanks to Taylor Swift’s upcoming concert film. It feels like this one might run the risk of getting lost in the shuffle theatrically. Fortunately, it will be making its way to Shudder a few weeks later, where it will surely find its audience.

The cast includes Ezequiel Rodríguez, Demián Salomón, Silvina Sabater, Virginia Garofalo, Paula Rubinsztein and Luis Dziembrowski. Fernando Diaz and Roxana Ramos are on board as producers, with Diaz, Ramos, Samuel Zimmerman and Emily Gotto serving as executive producers.

When Evil Lurks is set to hit theaters on October 6 before hitting Shudder on October 27.
