It's been a while since we heard a peep about the upcoming reboot of The Crow starring Bill Skarsgård and FKA Twigs, so we're very excited to read today's news, exclusively via Deadline, that Lionsgate have secured an eight-figure deal for domestic rights to the action-horror.
Rupert Sanders' (Snow White and the Huntsman) reimagining of Alex Proyas' 1994 cult classic is scheduled for a 2024 release.
Famous for being the last onscreen appearance of the late Brandon Lee who was tragically killed during production, The Crow was based on the comic by James O'Barr and follows Eric Draven, a musician resurrected from death to take revenge on the gang that murdered him and his fiancée. Whether the reboot will differ from the source material is still unknown, but we do know the script was written by Oscar nominee Zach Baylin (King Richard) and Will Schneider.
Danny Huston (Wonder Woman, The Proposition), Laura Birn (Foundation), Sami Bouajila (A Son), and Jordan Bolger (The Woman King) also star.
Speaking with Deadline, Lionsgate’s Executive VP Acquisitions and Co-Productions, Charlotte Koh had this to say about the acquisition:
“We appreciate what The Crow character and original movie mean to legions of fans and believe this new film will offer audiences an authentic and visceral reinterpretation of its emotional power and mythology [...] To work with a creative team led by Rupert’s unparalleled visual style and storytelling and with a producing team who have made some of the most popular and impactful films of the last several decades is a true privilege.”
The Crow was shot on location in Prague and Munich, which gives us hope for a gorgeous, moody atmosphere that Sanders is no stranger to capturing.
