The beginning of the end is nearly upon us. Nearly eight years after the show first premiered on Netflix, the final season of Stranger Things is getting ready to begin filming in January. Eleven and the gang will ring in the new year by finally getting cameras rolling on the last batch of episodes in this beloved sci-fi series. This, according to Deadline, with the outlet revealing that production will get underway sometime between January 5 and 8, 2024.

Cast members are said to already be in Atlanta, Georgia, where much of the show is filmed. Table reads are expected to be taking place soon, meaning the production is gearing up. Originally, Netflix had hoped to roll cameras much sooner in the year. However, the Writers Guild of America strike, which was soon followed by the Screen Actors Guild strike, threw a wrench in those gears. After months of Hollywood essentially being at a standstill, the work can now begin.

Filming will begin will over a year after Stranger Things season 4 premiered on the streaming service, with the showing airing in two parts during the summer 2022. For what it’s worth, season 4 decimated viewership records for the service. Netflix probably isn’t eager for the show to conclude but all good things must come to an end. At this point, so many of the show’s cast members, including Millie Bobby Brown and David Harbour, have become in-demand stars. Keeping the cast together for much longer seems untenable.

Very little has been said about season 5 by way of specifics. We do know that Dan Trachtenberg (10 Cloverfield Lane, Prey) is going to direct at least one episode. It’s also going to be massive in scope, it seems. Executive producer Shawn Levy previously indicated that Netflix is going to spare no expense in bringing the show’s final season to life.

"There’s no way to be contiguous with season 4, and not, frankly, expand scale and depth. It’s major, major, cinematic storytelling that happens to be called a TV series. Stranger Things 5 is as big as any of the biggest movies that we see."

The cast also includes Winona Ryder, Finn Wolfhard, Gaten Matarazzo, Caleb McLaughlin, Natalia Dyer and Charlie Heaton. It was created by Matt and Ross Duffer, who will still be in the Netflix business after this show wraps up its run. They are also currently developing a new series titled The Boroughs, among other projects for the streamer.

Stranger Things season 5 does not currently have a release date but, at this rate, late 2024 or early 2025 seems likely.
