The Universal Monsters are coming back to life thanks to the folks at Skybound. The company has announced a brand new comic book miniseries titled Universal Monsters: Frankenstein, which is set to hit shelves this summer. It’s the latest in a line of comics reviving Universal’s classic monsters, following in the footsteps of last year’s Dracula.

Writer and artist Michael Walsh (The Silver Coin) is responsible for the new spin on the tale inspired by Mary Shelley’s timeless work. Image Comics will publish the four-issue series, with the first issue hitting stands in August. You can check out the cover for the first issue below. As for the story that Walsh has cooked up? The synopsis for the first issue reads as follows:

“In this first issue, Dr. Henry Frankenstein begins his unholy quest to create life by robbing the grave of a decorated police officer to find necessary parts, specifically a strong pair of hands. But little does he know that the corpse has a son who is mourning a father – and that this young boy will forever change Frankenstein’s life.”

Walsh had this to say about crafting the book:

“The story of Dr. Frankenstein and his poor, misunderstood monster is one of the most recognizable and influential horror tales ever told… It’s also one of my favorites. The original 1931 film from Universal Pictures is a continuing inspiration for my art and storytelling, so, as you can imagine, I was honored to be able to play in that sandbox. Trying to tell an original story while staying true to the canon of that film was an exciting yet daunting prospect. It’s been some of the most fun I’ve had making comic books, and I know that fans of Frankenstein and horror will have a blast experiencing these characters and iconic scenes like never before.”

This is the third Universal Monsters series launched by Skybound, following James Tynion IV and Martin Simmonds’ Dracula, along with Ram V, Dan Watters, and Matthew Roberts’ Creature From The Black Lagoon Lives! which debuts in April.

“Michael Walsh’s take on Frankenstein feels like a comic book classic in the making,” said Alex Antone, Editorial Director at Skybound. “While each issue stands alone as its own vignette, in a way that only he can, Michael has brilliantly sewn together a brand-new perspective which both lovingly adapts the Universal Pictures film and breathes new life into one of the most important horror stories of all-time.”

Universal Monsters: Frankenstein #1 hits shelves on August 28.
