2024-horrormovies

2023 was another banner year for horror, and we've been quite spoiled in the last several years with this bountiful feast. As we reflect on our favorites from this year, we're also looking forward to some major horror releasing in 2024.

From original horror like Blumhouse's Night Swim and this summer's Trap, to familiar franchises like The First Omen and Beetlejuice 2 we're in for a treat. "Radio Silence Untitled Monster Movie" added a dash of mystery to 2024, slated to drop in April.

We had no idea what to expect, but we've since gotten the title and a trailer, and we know we'll be at the theater opening weekend.

Here's a complete list of all the new horror movies releasing in 2024.

Some without concrete release dates, and some with very little details, but as always we'll add more information as it comes in, and we expect this list is going to grow quite a bit!

1. Night Swim - Jan 5

night-swim-trailer-header

The first major horror release of 2024 hails from Blumhouse. Our very own Scott Wampler sums it up rather nicely, "from the looks of things, this creepy aquatic tale may very well do for swimming pools what Steven Spielberg's Jaws once did for the ocean."

Based on the acclaimed 2014 short film by Rod Blackhurst and Bryce McGuire, the film stars Wyatt Russell (The Falcon and the Winter Soldier) as Ray Waller, a former major league baseball player forced into early retirement by a degenerative illness, who moves into a new home with his concerned wife Eve (Oscar nominee Kerry Condon, The Banshees of Inisherin), teenage daughter Izzy (Amélie Hoeferle, The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes) and young son Elliot (Gavin Warren, Fear the Walking Dead).

Secretly hoping, against the odds, to return to pro ball, Ray persuades Eve that the new home’s shimmering backyard swimming pool will be fun for the kids and provide physical therapy for him. But a dark secret in the home’s past will unleash a malevolent force that will drag the family under, into the depths of inescapable terror.

You can now watch Night Swim at home, pair it with our pool water punch recipe.

2. Destroy All Neighbors — January 12

Destroy All Neighbors

William Brown (Jonah Ray Rodrigues), a neurotic, self-absorbed musician determined to finish his prog-rock magnum opus, faces a creative roadblock in the form of a noisy and grotesque neighbor named Vlad (Alex Winter). Finally working up the nerve to demand that Vlad keep it down, William inadvertently decapitates him.

But, while attempting to cover up one murder, William’s accidental reign of terror causes victims to pile up and become undead corpses who torment and create more bloody detours on his road to prog-rock Valhalla.

Destroy All Neighbors is a twisted splatter-comedy about a deranged journey of self-discovery full of goopy practical FX, a well-known ensemble cast, and LOTS of blood.

Stream Destroy All Neighbors exclusively on Shudder January 12.

3. True Detective: Night Country — January 14

TrueDetective2 Cropped

Ok, this one isn't a movie, but it absolutely needs to be on your radar. There's a reason folks are already raving about the fourth season of True Detective and widely calling it the best season since the first. Issa López takes the helm as writer and director and steers us into the arctic for a horror story that masterfully fits into the world of True Detective, while also making it wholly her own.

Jodie Foster and Kali Reis star as local law enforcement officials at odds with one another, and pretty much everything and everyone around them. With nods to snowy classics like The Thing, López crafts a mystery in the dark, and trust me when I say this season is an absolute feast for horror fans.

True Detective: Night Country premieres on HBO Max and is also streaming on Max Sunday, January 14 at 9 p.m. ET and PT. Stay tuned for our cast interviews from the True Detective red carpet premiere.

4. Dario Argento Panico - February 2

Dario Argento Panico

The legendary director gets the documentary treatment. What's special about this is that Argento himself takes part in the film, along with an impressive list of interviewees includes Asia Argento, Fiore Argento, Nicolas Winding Refn, Gaspar Noè, Guillermo Del Toro, Michel Savia and Lamberto Bava. Here's the official synopsis:

“In the secluded ambiance of hotel rooms, Dario Argento crafted his greatest cinematic creations, seeking solace from the outside world to delve into his nightmares.

Now, he finds himself in a hotel room to return to the very setting that ignited his creative fervor to conclude his latest script and participate in an intimate interview, all while being followed by a film crew documenting his life for a movie about his illustrious career.”

Dario Argento Panico is streaming on Shudder February 2

5. Lisa Frankenstein — February 9

lisa-frankenstein-trailer

Diablo Cody penned this neon horror-comedy set in the '80s, starring Freaky's Kathryn Newton and Riverdale's Cole Sprouse, and we are pretty fuckin excited about it. Nothing says Valentine's Day plans like a little teenage necromancy.

Liza Soberano, Henry Eikenberry, Joe Chrest and Carla Gugino round out this stellar coming of RAGE love story about a misunderstood teenager and her high school crush, who happens to be a handsome corpse.

After a set of playfully horrific circumstances bring him back to life, the two embark on a murderous journey to find love, happiness… and a few missing body parts along the way.

Watch the Lisa Frankenstein trailer, and check out our interview with costume designer Meagan McLaughlin and our sit-down interview with Lisa Frankenstein stars Kathryn Newton and Cole Sprouse.

6. Out Of Darkness - February 9

OUT-OF-DARKNESS-Courtesy-Bleecker-Street

A small boat reaches the shores of a raw and desolate landscape. A group of six have struggled across the narrow sea to find a new home. They are starving, desperate, and living 45,000 years ago.

First they must find shelter, and they strike out across the tundra wastes towards the distant mountains that promise the abundant caves they need to survive. But when night falls, anticipation turns to fear and doubt as they realize they are not alone.

Terrifying sounds suggest something monstrous at large in this landscape, something that could kill or steal them away. As relationships in the group fracture, the determination of one young woman reveals the terrible actions taken to survive.

7. Skeletons In The Closet - February 9

Skeletons In The Closet - February 9

Skeletons In The Closet is streaming on Shudder February 9

8. Stopmotion - February 23

stopmotion-header

Directed by Robert Morgan (who co-wrote the screenplay with Robin King), Stopmotion revolves around a stop-motion animator by the name of Ella whose latest project might just be driving her to the brink of madness.

We caught this one at Fantastic Fest and it is gorgeous and grotesque, and we can't wait for you all to see it!

Stopmotion is in theaters February 23 and VOD March 15.

9. History Of Evil - February 23

HISTORY OF EVIL - Still 1

Official synopsis: In the near future, war and corruption have plagued America and turned it into a theocratic police state. Against the oppression, ordinary citizens have formed a group called The Resistance.

One such member, Alegre Dyer, breaks out of political prison and reunites with her husband Ron and daughter Daria. On the run from the militia, the family takes shelter in a remote safe house.

But their journey is far from over, as the house’s dark past begins to eat away at Ron, and his earnest desire to keep his family safe is overtaken by something much more sinister.

History Of Evil is streaming on Shudder February 23.

10. Imaginary - March 8

imaginary-header-1

A ferocious teddy bear and perhaps an army of evil imaginary friends? We're in. When Jessica moves back into her childhood home with her family, her youngest stepdaughter Alice develops an eerie attachment to a stuffed bear named Chauncey she finds in the basement.

Alice's games with Chauncey become increasingly sinister, and Jessica intervenes only to realize Chauncey is much more than the stuffed toy bear she believed him to be.

Imaginary stars DeWanda Wise (who's also onboard as a producer), Tom Payne, Taegen Burns, Pyper Braun, Veronica Falcon, and Betty Buckley. In case you missed it, here's our Instagram Live Q&A with Imaginary star DeWanda Wise.

Wadlow (who previously helmed Cry Wolf and The Curse of Bridge Hollow) directs from a script he co-wrote with Greg Erb and Jason Oremland.

11. Late Night With The Devil - March 22

late night with the devil

Late Night with the Devil has been an incredibly popular film on the fest circuit.

We’ve been tracking this one for a bit, in no small part because filmmakers Cameron and Colin Cairnes (100 Bloody Acres) claim to have gotten the idea to cast Dastmalchian after reading his love letter to late-night horror hosts in issue #11 of FANGORIA.

The film finds 1970s talk show host Jack Delroy (David Dastmalchian) on his last legs, wrung out by personal tragedy and in need of a ratings win.

His plan to feature as a guest a young girl who is allegedly possessed seems like a Halloween night layup… until the cameras roll and all hell literally breaks loose.

Late Night With The Devil is in theaters March 22 and streaming on Shudder April 19.

12. Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire - March 22

ghostbusters-afterlife-header-2

The Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire cast is, as you may have already heard, sprawling, and includes Dan Aykroyd, Bill Murray, Ernie Hudson, Paul Rudd, Kumail Nanjiani, Patton Oswalt, James Acaster, Emily Alyn Lind, Finn Wolfhard, Mckenna Grace, Celeste O'Connor, Logan Kim, Annie Potts, and - last, but certainly not least - the great Carrie Coon.

The film centers on the Spengler family as they return to where it all started – the iconic New York City firehouse – to team up with the original Ghostbusters, who’ve developed a top-secret research lab to take busting ghosts to the next level.

But when the discovery of an ancient artifact unleashes an evil force, Ghostbusters new and old must join forces to protect their home and save the world from a second Ice Age.

Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire is in theaters March 22.

13. Immaculate - March 22

Immaculate Sydney Sweeney

Originally slated for an April release, Neon just picked this one up and announced a theatrical release date of March 22. Produced by and starring Sydney Sweeney as Cecilia, a woman of devout faith.

Cecilia is warmly welcomed to the picture-perfect Italian countryside, where she is offered a new role at an illustrious convent.

But it becomes clear to Cecilia that her new home harbors dark and horrifying secrets.

14. You'll Never Find Me - March 22

You'll Never Find Me - March 22

Official synopsis: An isolated man living at the back of a desolate caravan park is visited by a desperate young woman seeking shelter from a violent storm.

As the savage storm worsens, these solitary souls begin to feel threatened – but who should really be afraid?

You can find You'll Never Find Me streaming on Shudder March 22

15. The First Omen - April 5

the-first-omen

When a young American woman is sent to Rome to begin a life of service to the church, she encounters a darkness that causes her to question her own faith and uncovers a terrifying conspiracy that hopes to bring about the birth of evil incarnate.

Directed by Arkasha Stevenson, the current plot synopsis doesn't give much away, but if this is a prequel to The Omen and the story revolves around a young woman attempting to stop "the birth of evil incarnate," we can probably extrapolate out some assumptions about how The First Omen plays out.

16. Baghead — April 5

Baghead

Initially, we didn't have much information on the upcoming Baghead, aside from a cool trailer and a January 26 UK release date. We finally have domestic release info and a proper synopsis! Night Swim director Bryce McGuire is one of the writers on this one, which follows a young woman who inherits a run-down pub and discovers a dark secret within its basement. Check out the full synopsis below, and keep an eye out for our Baghead-inspired Cursed Currywurst recipe to pair with your viewing.

Following the death of her estranged father (Peter Mullan), Iris (Freya Allan) learns she has inherited a run-down, centuries-old pub. She travels to Berlin to identify her father’s body and meet with The Solicitor (Ned Dennehy) to discuss the estate. When the deed is signed, becomes inextricably tied to an unspeakable entity that resides in the pub’s basement–Baghead–a shape-shifting creature that can transform into the dead.

Two thousand in cash for two minutes with the creature is all it takes for desperate loved ones to ease their grief. Iris is tempted to exploit the creature’s powers and help desperate people for a price. But she soon discovers breaking the two-minute rule can have terrifying consequences.

Baghead will be streaming on Shudder and AMC+ April 5.

17. Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire - April 12

Godzilla X Kong

Regardless of how you pronounce it, Godzilla x Kong is gonna' rule. Serving as a sequel to 2021’s Godzilla vs. Kong, but this time the two iconic monsters are no longer at odds with one another.

"Pitting the almighty Kong and the fearsome Godzilla against a colossal undiscovered threat hidden within our world, challenging their very existence – and our own.

The epic new film will delve further into the histories of these Titans, their origins, and the mysteries of Skull Island and beyond, while uncovering the mythic battle that helped forge these extraordinary beings and tied them to humankind forever.”

18. Sting - April 12

STING-Still1-1340x754

A spider movie with practical effects created by 5-time Academy Award Winner Wētā Workshop!? Our skin is crawling and we are screaming in a combo of terror and absolute delight. Here's a brief synopsis:

“After raising an unnervingly talented spider in secret, 12-year-old Charlotte must face the facts about her pet—and fight for her family’s survival—when the once-charming creature rapidly transforms into a giant, flesh-eating monster.”

If you're into spider horror, watch the Sting trailer and catch Sting in theaters April 12.

19. Abigail — April 19

Abigail vampire movie 2024

Update: We finally have a title for what we've been referring to as Radio Silence Untitled Monster Movie. And as catchy as that is, we sure are glad to get both a title and a trailer for Abigail.

The mystery plot is finally revealed, and we are getting a child vampire ballerina. Back in May, we shared a tad bit more info as to what the plot might be, "Plot details are being kept in the trunk of a car, but the project was at one point titled Dracula’s Daughter. That project centered on a group of kidnappers who abduct a band of young people, one of whom ends up being the titular character. Woe then betides the kidnappers."

Now we have the official synopsis:

After a group of would-be criminals kidnap the 12-year-old ballerina daughter of a powerful underworld figure, all they have to do to collect a $50 million ransom is watch the girl overnight. In an isolated mansion, the captors start to dwindle, one by one, and they discover, to their mounting horror, that they’re locked inside with no normal little girl.

Hell yeah, we can't wait! Abigail is in theaters April 19.

20. Infested - April 26

Infested - April 26

This French creepy-crawly flick focuses on an invasion of venomous spiders, forcing residents of a suburban building to find a way out.

Trapped in a building? Bad. Trapped in a building with spiders? Quadruple bad.

Infested is streaming on Shudder April 26.

21. Cuckoo - May 3

CUCKOO_NEON_Gretchen_June-8_Felix_First-Look

We first heard about Cuckoo nearly two years ago when we brought you a first look still at Cuckoo star Hunter Schafer, with hardly any word on it since.

Good news: Cuckoo is premiering at SXSW this year and heading to theaters May 3. And we finally have some plot details and the first official Cuckoo trailer.

"On a trip to the German Alps with her father and stepmother, Gretchen discovers that the resort town where they’re staying hides sinister secrets, as she’s plagued by strange noises and frightening visions of a woman pursuing her."

Written and directed by German filmmaker Tilman Singer (Luz), Cuckoo also stars Dan Stevens (The Guest), Jessica Henwick (Game of Thrones), Marton Csókás (Freelance), Greta Fernández (Santo) and Jan Bluthardt (Luz).

22. I Saw The TV Glow - May 3

I_Saw_the_TV_Glow-Still1

Since premiering at Sundance earlier this year, Jane Schoenbrun's I Saw The TV Glow has been racking up rave reviews. With a stacked cast including Justice Smith (Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, The Voyeurs), Brigette Lundy-Paine (Atypical), Ian Foreman (Let The Right One In), Helena Howard (Madeline's Madeline), Danielle Deadwyler (Till) and Limp Bizkit's Fred Durst.

The story follows teenager Owen, just trying to make it through life in the suburbs when his classmate introduces him to a mysterious late-night TV show — a vision of a supernatural world beneath their own. In the pale glow of the television, Owen’s view of reality begins to crack.

Featuring original music composed by singer-songwriter Alex G (who also worked on World's Fair), indie rock artist Lindsey Jordan (Snail Mail), Yeule, Haley Dahl’s Sloppy Jane (featuring Phoebe Bridgers), King Woman and Caroline Polachek. Watch the I Saw The TV Glow trailer for a peek at the "heavy musical component."

Emma Stone and Dave McCary's production banner Fruit Tree is on board alongside A24. With such a ridiculously wonderful amount of talent attached to this one, we can't wait to find out what Jane Schoenbrun has in store for us.

I Saw The TV Glow is in theaters May 3.

Brandon Lee as THE CROW (1994)

One month after the 30th anniversary of Alex Proyas' original The Crow adaptation, Rupert Sanders' adaptation of The Crow will make its way to theaters June 7. Based on the iconic James O'Barr comic series of the same name, this time It and Barbarian star Bill Skarsgård will be playing the role of Eric Draven, who returns from the dead to take revenge on the evil bastards who murdered him and his girlfriend. Rupert Sanders, who previously helmed Ghost in the Shell and Snow White and the Huntsman, directs.

26. The Watchers - June 7

27. A Quiet Place: Day One -June 28

A Quiet Place (2018)

Fans of the Quiet Place universe can (silently) celebrate because the prequel is almost here! Some new faces we'll be seeing include Lupita Nyong’o, Joseph Quinn, Alex Wolff, Djimon Hounsou and Denis O’Hare.

The franchise spinoff is written and directed by Michael Sarnoski (Pig), and deviates from the Abbott family story. Krasinski shared with Deadline that the prequel will follow Nyong’o's character in New York and “takes us back to where it all began.”

28. Longlegs - July 12

longlegs-header-new-new

A serial killer case leads an investigation to uncover an occult organization, but the lead detective might be connected to this case more than he could ever realize.

Starring Nicolas Cage, Alicia Witt and Maika Monroe. The Longlegs marketing campaign has been mighty mysterious, with a string of teasers featuring no title unless viewers deciphered a code.

We finally have a blatant Longlegs trailer, and our curiosity only continues to bubble over.

29. Trap - August 2

Josh Hartnett PENNY DREADFUL

PENNY DREADFUL (2014)

We don't know much about M. Night Shyamalan's upcoming movie hitting theaters in summer 2024, but we do know the cast includes Josh Hartnett and Hayley Mills, which is exciting enough in itself.

30. Alien: Romulus August 16

Alien: Romulus

Officially, this one is currently being referred to as "Untitled Alien Event Movie." Unofficially (and on IMDB), it's been referred to as Alien: Romulus. Whatever the final title ends up being, we know for certain the star of the movie, Cailee Spaeny revealed in an interview with Variety that this installment is "supposed to slot in between the first movie and the second movie" from the original Alien franchise.

Starring alongside Spaeny are Isabela Merced, David Jonsson, Archie Renaux, Spike Fearn and Aileen Wu. So far, the details of the standalone story remain tightly under wraps, but with a whole fifty-seven years of plot time to play with, it really could go anywhere.

31. Beetlejuice 2 — September 6

Burton-Beetlejuice-2

After lots of rumors and false starts, Beetlejuice 2 wrapped in November. It's a real movie and we get to see it in 2024. We recently learned the official title on this one is Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.

As Scott Wampler notes, "We don't know much about Beetlejuice 2 (though we can say with certainty that it won't be Beetlejuice Goes Hawaiian, another iteration of this sequel that almost got made once upon a time), but the few things we do know are intriguing: for one thing, Beetlejuice will have a wife, played by Monica Bellucci.

We also know that Jenna Ortega will be playing the daughter of Winona Ryder's Lydia Deetz, and that Willem Dafoe is playing a former B-movie action star who's now working as a detective in the afterlife. How any of this fits together is anyone's guess, but we're admittedly very curious to find out.

In addition to the names mentioned above, Beetlejuice 2 will also star Catherine O'Hara and Justin Theroux. Here's everything we know so far about Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.

32. Speak No Evil - September 13

Speak No Evil (2022)

SPEAK NO EVIL (2022)

Update: Originally slated for an August 9 release, Speak No Evil moves to Friday, September 13th. Universal also has "Untitled Blumhouse Productions Film" on the calendar for the same date, we'll keep them both on here for now, but they very well could be one and the same!

Speak No Evil was certainly one of the most brutal movies of 2022. As a matter of fact, it was one of the more brutal offerings in recent memory.

An American remake is on the way, starring James McAvoy and directed by Eden Lake's James Watkins from Christian and Mad Tafdrup's original screenplay. Just in case you've forgotten the synopsis of Speak No Evil (and it isn't seared into your nightmares like it is for us), in the original 2022 movie, a Danish family visits a Dutch family they met on a holiday.

In a tale of killer good manners, what was supposed to be an idyllic weekend slowly starts unraveling as the Danes try to stay polite in the face of unpleasantness.

33. Untitled Blumhouse Productions Film – September 13

Blumhouse-logo.jpg

We have zero information about this one aside from a release date. September 13 just so happens to be a Friday the 13th, and we're curious to see what horrors Blumhouse will be offering up for the occasion.

We'll keep you posted as we learn more!

34. Smile 2 - October 18

Smile2

SMILE (2022)

35. Terrifier 3 - October 25

terrifier-3-art

The fourth entry into the franchise will also see the return of Samantha Scaffidi as Victoria Heyes, the heroine turned villainess of Terrifier.

In the third installment of Damien Leone’s breakout horror film, Art the Clown is set to unleash chaos on the unsuspecting residents of Miles County as they peacefully drift off to sleep on Christmas Eve.

36. Wolf Man - October 25

christopher-abbott

Leigh Whannell's Wolf Man originally had Ryan Gosling in the lead, but it was announced in December that the project had a new leading man in the form of Possessor and Sanctuary star Christopher Abbott, with Gosling staying onboard the film as an executive producer.

Ozark star Julia Garner has also joined the cast, plot details are largely being kept under wraps for the new take on the werewolf tale.

Whannell co-wrote the screenplay alongside Corbett Tuck, Lauren Schuker Blum and Rebecca Angelo.

37. Nosferatu - December 25

nosferatu-eggers-header-1

Nosferatu stars Bill Skarsgård (as the blood-sucking Count Orlok), Nicholas Hoult, Lily-Rose Depp, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Emma Corrin, Ralph Ineson, Simon McBurney and Willem Dafoe.

Focus Features describes Eggers' remake as "a gothic tale of obsession between a haunted young woman and the terrifying vampire infatuated with her, causing untold horror in its wake."

We've been teased, our appetites have been whetted, and we are ready to spend Christmas 2024 with this blood-sucking beast.

38. Jordan Peele’s Fourth Film - TBD

NOPE (2022)

NOPE (2022)

Update: No sooner had we published this list than Universal removed Peele's untitled fourth film from their 2024 roster. Originally slated for a Christmas Day release, the plot thickens as now we don't know when this mystery movie will hit theater screens.

The official IMDB title is "Untitled Fourth Film Directed by Jordan Peele," and the official IMDB synopsis is "Plot kept under wraps."

But it's classified as a horror/mystery/thriller and that's got us pretty dang excited.

39. Return To Silent Hill — TBD

Return to Silent Hill

Update: IMDB previously had a release date of April 26, but that has since been replaced with a more general 2024 release.

Pyramid Head will be making a long-awaited triumphant return very soon! Director Christopher Gans has also confirmed that the film will feature "a few nods to P.T.," referencing the ill-fated but utterly terrifying playable teaser for Hideo Kojima's scrapped Silent Hills.

The film will follow James (Irvine), a man broken after being separated from his one true love (Jigsaw's Hannah Emily Anderson). When a mysterious letter calls him back to Silent Hill in search of her, he finds a once-recognizable town transformed by an unknown evil.

As James descends deeper into the darkness, he encounters terrifying figures, both familiar and new, and begins to question his own sanity as he struggles to make sense of reality and hold on long enough to save his lost love.

When will we finally be able to Return to Silent Hill? We aren't exactly sure, but keeping our fingers crossed for an early 2024 release.
